Art For Death's Sake

Sculptor Dame Phyllida Barlow has died aged 78. She didn't achieve prominence until she retired after 4 decades as an art teacher, in 2009. She was made a dame in 2016 and  represented GB in the Venice Biennale in 2017

Actually she didn’t achieve prominence until now, right here on Deathlist.  Prior to her death no one noticed her ‘sculptures’ or had a clue who she was.  She is most noteworthy for being the only Phyllida who will ever be posted on DL.

she did manage à full Le Monde obit so I don’t think she was a nobody

Taiwan's likely most notable sculptor Ju Ming who used for example bronze, stainless steel and styrofoam to make his art, often boxy martial arts (Tai Chi) figures (see Tai Chi Single Whip of Quebec) widely being reported dead at 85, cause of death said to be suicide after battle with an incurable illness.

Doesn't look that bad, but according to this article last week he "didn't react to anything happening around him and looked like he was in very poor health".

Still not dead but Juhani Palmu had severe flu and a "near-fatal infection" a week or two ago, now discharged and recovering.

He does have a Dilip Kumar/Zsa Zsa Gabor-like health history, but he's 20 years younger which makes it much less impressive.

He won the Guggenheim Museum’s 100,000 dollar Hugo Boss Prize in 2010 at the age of 70.

Hans-Peter Feldmann, who has been described as a “pioneer of artistic appropriation”, has died at the age of 82, his representatives have confirmed.

The German conceptual artist, whose body of work encompassed banal and overlooked objects including shoes, seascapes and strawberries, died on May 30.

Visual artist David Le Batard, commonly known as "LEBO", died at 50 years:

 His mural, painting, and sculpture work has made him a staple of the South Florida art scene. He has frequently been commissioned to perform live art on tour with popular musical acts, such as Beastie Boys, Burning Spear, and Thievery Corporation.

His brother Dan Le Batard announced on his sports podcast Tuesday. The sportscaster added that his brother had suffered from an undisclosed illness before his death.
