Gordie How hat-trick: goal, assist and a DNR notice.

Very sad day for Detroit sports fans :*-(

RIP Mr Hockey.

To think we lost Ali and Howe, two sports mega legends, inside of a week....

Not a death, but the family of "Mr. Hockey" himself, Gordie Howe, has revealed that he's battling the early stages of dementia. Doesn't sound like he's in any immediate danger, but probably something to keep an eye on.

Dead: http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2016/06/10/gordie-howe-dies-according-to-numerous-reports/

Number of DDP teams require a qo.

damn! he had been on my list for 5 of the last 7 years. :banghead:

RIP Mr. Hockey

Is it wrong that the only reason I know Gordie Howe is because he provided the face of 'Woodrow', Edna Krabappel's romantic pen pal in a classic Simpsons episode..?

It would only be wrong if you were pretending to be a hockey fan.

I wasn't going to share this, but because I didn't remember ever seeing that episode I googled it and, apparently, it originally aired the day after I was born.

One of the great college coaches ever has died, RIP.

Ron Mason, 76-year-old led the Michigan State Spartans to the 1986 NCAA national championship and was the winningest college hockey coach when he retired from coaching in 2002, with 924 wins over 36 seasons between Lake Superior State, Bowling Green and MSU. Mason was 635-270-69 in 23 seasons with the Spartans, leading MSU to the NCAA tournament 19 times.

Mason still is No. 2 on the all-time wins list, behind Boston College's Jerry York (1,012). Michigan's Red Berenson is No. 4, with 835.

Some recent news on how Stan Mikita is doing:

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160619/sports/160618969/

"Still able to walk and maintain his balance", still knows which child is the youngest, but not their names. "He's himself, and he's not"

I didn't read your link but I can say that I almost put Mikita on my list this year.....he was one of my last 5 cuts or so. Reason was I read an article wherein his daughter gave all the reasons to list him -- declining mental capabilities that deteriorated very quickly -- but closed by saying in essence 'he's still as strong as an ox, and as bright as one too' (I summarized). Well by golly if he's physically normal I've no reason to put him on my list, and so I didn't.

Lou Fontinato, who in seven seasons with the Rangers and two with the Montreal Canadiens made a reputation — and many fans — with his fists, if not necessarily with his skates or his stick, setting a record for minutes spent in the penalty box, died on Sunday in Guelph, Ontario, his hometown. He was 84. The National Hockey League reported the death on its website, saying Fontinato had recently been admitted to a nursing home after exhibiting signs of dementia.

Former Vancouver Canucks enforcer Gino Odjick has a rare terminal heart illness, and doctors say he may have as little as a few weeks to live.

http://canada.trendolizer.com/2016/06/ex-nhl-enforcer-gino-odjick-may-have-months-or-even-weeks-to-live.html

Unless that's some kind of update that's two year old news and he has since made a miraculous recovery. Reference my 2014 DP teams for further information on his recovery and my disappointment.

Americans Hall of Fame defenseman Richie Dunn, whose smile and laughter eased the tension and pressure felt by hockey teams at crunch time, has died. He was 59.

Mr. Dunn played 327 of his 483 NHL regular-season games with the Sabres, and also played on defense for the Calgary Flames and Hartford Whalers.

Pretty risky name for 2017. He only played 37 NHL games,as the rest of his career was spent in various minor leagues. On the basis of his hockey career probably has a 1% chance of getting an Orbit outside of North America, but him having a small acting role in the 2004 film Miracle may be enough for a Daily Mail mention.
