Eddie Olczyk, former player, most notably for the Chicago Blackhawks as well as former head coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Reading between the lines, it seems to have been caught early, and non-metastasised colon cancer has a very good chance of recovery, but just in case I'm reading things wrong, I'm putting it in here! He might just turn out to be a good risk to take for some of the DPs which allow US obits (or, if DDP rules change next year, DDP and other similarly ruled DPs as well).

Eddie Olczyk "has to deal with cancer (stage III colon cancer) for the rest of his life":

Johnny Bower, a Canadian Ice Hockey player who played in the NHL for the New York Rangers (1953-1957) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (1958-1970), has died aged 93. He was listed in the 100 Greatest NHL Players - a DDP Pick.

Edit: Daily Mail obituary.

No obit yet that I can find, either local or international. This should make Jim Conacher the new oldest living former NHLer at 96.

He really shattered some barriers there.  Can't count all the Chinese in the NHL since.

OTOH, I'm sure in his one and only game he exposed the chink in the armor of the Montreal defence.

Not to be lost is what isn't being said outright: It took the NHL 1 game and 1 game only to realize the Chinese had no business in a hockey rink.

Perhaps the next Sasha Lakovic in line, Lyle Odelein faces some serious health issues.

I think you're right overall, that unless you are a top 5 hockey star in your era, getting a UK obit is going to be a challenge.  That said, Odelein had an actual career vs Lakovich's 'cup of coffee' in the NHL, as they say.  Even if Lyle was a lock-cinch to die, that obit is going to be worrisome for DDP purposes.  At least I've come to that conclusion.

Sasha was always a 90% chance he never obit's name,Lyle will be a 50/50 gambit because of how long his NHL career was.

No official confirmations yet, but the names of some of the victims are starting to trickle out.

Odelein is improving according to some tweets, likely reducing the chances of me moving on to the semifinals in the deathlist cup...

They’re still very mum about his exact ailment though.  Have you found anything out Joey?

He's been dead a little longer than early Saturday morning.  Re-check the story :-).
