So Ariel Sharon has a fairly good prognosis, or summat.

Not very famous but just got a call that an old racing buddy of mine Victor Gilmore ( http://www.victorgilmore.co.uk/victors%20gallery.html ) was killed today.

Racing, or by other means?

Racing at Killalane (Irish pure road race outside Dublin) a marshal was hurt in the same incident.

He was a bit of a character was Victor, at the same race 9 years ago he set the record for the most "rides" at a road race. 5 races and 6 shags!

Peter Warr

The former Lotus team boss has died of a heart attack aged 72. He was responsible for hiring Ayrton Senna as a driver in place of Nigel Mansell, against the wishes of the main team sponsor, John Players.

It hardly seemed worth while posting about Jenson Button's near miss with deadly armed force but when the report of half a dozen men armed with machine guns and it passes the "Item 1 on the news test" then I guess it should be noted here. What I would like to know were any of these louts picked up by the local police or are they still at large?

PS Obviously still at large since further reports of 7 Sauber mechanics and a number of Ferrari mechanics also being "successfully" mugged at gun point at the same place!

Watched Stirling Moss this morning on the Andrew Marr show. Certainly looked as if he has a number of years ahead of him. (Lift shafts permitting)

2010 F2 champion Dean Stoneman has testicular cancer. He would be a reasonable bet to get a full UK Obit, I would imagine due to his title win last year.

Also Dutch racing driver, drugs baron and general ner do well, Charles Zwolsman Sr. has died aged 55. Not a huge loss.

One for Maryport, methinks.

I'll try to make the iplayer synopsis as juicy as possible.

Oooooh!! Bring it on. A question: would it have a happier ending if you played it backwards, or forwards?

Sir Jackie Stewart taken ill on a flight and met by paramedics.

He's been battling prostate cancer for quite a few years now. Could be a sign to keep him in mind for next year

He was suffering from chest pains and is now "a bit shaken but absolutely fine", according to his son in this report.

I heard tonight that 4 times Indy 500 winner A J Foyt has just been quite ill with a 95% blockage somewhere near his heart. Said to have had a "stent" fitted to re open the flow. The old guy is 76 or so - one to keep an eye on in the next 5 years.

I'm no petol-head, but I have heard of a few of these folks. I opened a thread for Carroll Shelby a while ago, more well known for building/designing cars than racing them perhaps, Brabham and Moss of course, but one other that caught my eye, Guy Ligier - I can only summise he was the brains behind the Ligier F1 team.

Just a thought, wasn't Peter Lovely in the Wacky Races rather than the F1 races?

DWB :D

Some snippets of info about some of those on the 75+ list :

(33) Pete Lovely was not in 'Wacky Races' - that was Peter Perfect. Lovely bought a Lotus 49 and proceeded to enter a few GPs in 1969-70, usually not qualifying or finishing so far behind that he was not classified. For 1971, he got a Lotus 69 and did just as well.

Peter Perfectly-Lovely has passed away. http://www.autoweek.com/article/20110517/F1/110519858

Don't rule out Sebastian Vettel, he is on the way to being as good as Ayrton Senna but will he live long enough to win another World Championship?

I've found a great compilation of motorsports crashes from the good old days of yore, long before helmets, seatbelts and basic fire safety conspired to ruin the entertainment. It's amazing how many of the drivers thrown out of their vehicles manage to get up and scamper off.
