He's 69. Several weeks at least. There could be nasty complications, especially because this was an emergency transplant. How did they get a suitable lung that fast?

Not only the 'suitable lung' question, which is interesting for sure, but if he's had multiple transplants in the past, how would he have been a suitable top of the list candidate -- emergency or otherwise -- to receive said lung?  Isn't there a list or summat....?  If I'm COPD and this creep jumped in front of me, well......well fuck him.

If it was a medical emergency then he was likely put at the top of the list. I doubt they would have performed this kind of surgery if the chances of him dying were high so I am pretty sure he is safe for now. Him making it another five years is what I am worried about given his age and previous medical emergencies.

I wonder what the record is for survival following being given the last rites?

At 42 years Lauda must be up near the top of the pile if not at the very top.

Ray Shuck, 74 years and counting.

I think Zsa Zsa hold the record. She survived 25434 years after being given the last rites.

EDIT: JFK beats him with 43 years based on this article

I believe Maria Cappovilla lasted 116 years after.

My brother was given his last rites when he was 2 years old and now he is aged 20 and perfectly healthy. I am pretty sure there's tons of cases of infants getting their last rites only to make a miraculous recovery and lead a full life.

Not quite...84 actually.  Something about a pencil lead poking her arm and snapping off inside -- they were actual lead back circa 1940.  So I guess lead poisoning.

Or a short recovery - the transplant came out of the blue. If the body says no thanks, that's it.

I'd say September 1.

He could go back on dialysis and remain alive for ages

Just a thought, like - couldn't Ferrari use some of their millions to put him and Schumi in the same care facility.

Fuck knows, those two did loads for that team!

And Marlboro and lung cancer - helmets off! Niki's kidneys have already been replaced. A Roboniki film would be great - why not use parts of Schumi as well (not the brain - it's Marty Feldman stuff these days - Do not use!). Would make a great movie. Of course James Hun't ghost would be Roboniki's mentor.

Looking at the 'days to live' aspect, I don't think he has a long future.

https://www.gpfans.com/en/articles/2236/lauda-was-days-from-death-surgeons-reveal/

The

According to hospital officials, patients who have undergone similar procedures have a 90% chance of survival after one year and 75% after five years.

part doesn't inspire me with confidence.

He's 69, and was on a mechanical lung for a few days, he's taken a large punt on Life then burnt his coupon.

^^^ 40 year old joke.

Lauda's condition has apparently worsened. His kidneys have problems, the doctors had to use dialysis catheter. Already before the lung transplantation his kidneys (both of them transplanted) were in no good condition.
One more problem is that Lauda's body has not yet adopted the new lung.

Update:  there are positive news again?

The problems are resolved, with Lauda had been removed the kidney catheter for dialysis. He no longer hangs on any devices. He also did the first physiotherapy and breathing exercises. He breathes independently and can already speak. He is still in the intensive care unit.

Unconfirmed reports Ronnie Moore, an Australian-born New Zealand Speedway champion who won the Individual World Speedway Championship in 1954 and in 1959, has died at age 85.  A DDP pick.

Added him to my longlist as one of those potential strategic oldies a mere week ago! That was quick.
