Toast 16,144 Posted November 16, 2014 What caught my attention is the bit of text at the bottom, which asks for a donation to charity instead of flowers. I wasn't aware such a request (not in the Netherlands) is also a German thing. How's that in other parts of the world? I would say the vast majority of funerals in England now request "family flowers only", and donations to a specified charity from other mourners.

Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted November 29, 2014 Hey Book, I just thought of something interesting to research: how many cast and crew members from 1943's version of Munchausen are still with us? I saw that film for the first time about two years ago and loved it. (I'd argue it was probably the only good piece of art to come out of the Nazi regime...) For casual DeathListers who don't know about the film, Goebbels was jealous about the success of the 1939 technicolour extravaganza that was Hollywood's Wizard of Oz so he wanted to create his own colour fantasy film to showthe Nazis were just as good as the Yanks. It was decided they would make a version of the Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Unfortunately, all the talent in German had already been blacklisted, so Goebbels had to do a big backflip and re-endorse some people so they could make the film for him. He hired the bloke who wrote Emil and the Detectives to do the screenplay and he was able to add some subversive elements to the script, including showing black people in a very good light and there was absolutely nothing Goebbels could do about it if he wanted his film made. The end result was, IMHO, a fantasy masterpiece that does indeed hold its own against the Wizard of Oz. There endeth the history lesson.
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted November 29, 2014 Hey Book, I just thought of something interesting to research: how many cast and crew members from 1943's version of Munchausen are still with us? I saw that film for the first time about two years ago and loved it. (I'd argue it was probably the only good piece of art to come out of the Nazi regime...) I had a short look at the German Wikipedia entry about that film. One cast member, Trude Heess, has no date of death on her page, but I doubt that she lives at 104. The ten or so others I tried are all dead. Perhaps I can be arsed to check.the rest later. [A]ll the talent in German had already been blacklisted, so Goebbels had to do a big backflip and re-endorse some people so they could make the film for him. Auf Deutsch My knowledge of German film is shallow, mostly Fassbinder and Pedersen and cheesy Heinz Rühmann comedies my parents loved to watch, so I didn't know about Munchausen. I'll see if I can find it. regards, Hein
