Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted July 29, 2013 I'm going to copy and paste the Dead of the Recent World Cups in here, but aside from Benitez, 1982 also lost a World Cup player recently. Like Benitez, he only made one substitute appearance, but Santiago Santamaria was still part of the Argentine 1982 squad - http://www.europapress.es/latam/argentina/noticia-argentina-fallece-60-anos-santiago-cucurucho-santamaria-simbolo-newells-20130728185000.html

Predictor 1,018 Posted July 30, 2013 As an addendum to that grammatical zinger, I think that every player from the 1990 WC has now retired, with Kasey Keller (retired in 2011) being the last man standing. 1994 WC players still going: Viola (Brazil), Faryd Mondragon (Colombia), Teddy Lucic (Sweden). Not sure if Viola actually saw any action on the pitch though. Actually, Teddy Lucic retired back in November 2010. http://www.laget.se/...072/Teddy-Lucic Kf Velebit is a very tiny club. I bet no one in Sweden's even heard of it. I think it's in the 5th level of Swedish football. Also, he's a playing manager, so he probably doesn't enter the field now. Btw, can't believe we've lost Djalma AND Ramallets in such short time. Too bad about Benitez as well. RIP
Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted July 30, 2013 All amended accordingly. I'll start 1958 soon, but for now that'll probably be the last where I do a list as 1962 still has a reasonable amount of people living, or enough to not warrant a list like 1950 & 1954. Maybe in a few years.
Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted August 13, 2013 1954 has been amended after the death of Jean Vincent. He also played in 1958 (that list is under way and will be on here soon), but also took part in the 1982 World Cup as Cameroon's coach in their first - and reasonably successful - World Cup attempt. Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted August 23, 2013 Death Impends, again, you are a superstar, thank you. It allows me to edit it so much more easily. Whilst I'm at it Chilean player Alfonso Lara, who played in the 1974 World Cup, has died.

Toast 16,135 Posted August 23, 2013 I may be missing something obvious, but what is the significance of the ages quoted? I'm assuming it's the age at which they made their World Cup debuts, but wouldn't their ages now be more useful in the context of this thread? Save us having to do the sums. Toast, the easiest way for me to do the lists was to amend the "World Cup Squads" on Wikipedia and then delete those no longer with us. Unfortunately it both meant the above and the way it all comes out on this software, hence Death Impends has had to help out. But, in the long run, it now means I can edit as and when. When there's significantly less players alive from the 1950's, I'll look at the two 1960's tournaments.

Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted August 26, 2013 De Sordi was on my shortlist for 2014 based on it being World Cup year and his ill health. He was really unlucky to miss out on playing in the final, he'd played every other game. Both he and Gilmar were poorly so probably wouldnt have had any guest appearance next year anyway. Lady Grendel 139 Posted September 14, 2013 I go back to the 1982 world cup, but 1986 and 1994 are my favourite tournaments, 2006 was decent too. I go back to the 1978 World Cup. Scotland really, really thought they were in with a chance, or so the media told us. I was nearly 11 years old and it was a magical time, we thought Ally McLeod was the best. 135,000 Scots turned out at Hampden Park to wish the team well and we really did believe that the World Cup was ours. We failed dismally but I do think that was the making of the modern day 'Tartan Army' who now celebrate defeat and expect it, on the rare occasions we win the country goes into meltdown. 1982 was fun with Davey Narey's 'toe poke' goal against Brazil I loved the 1990 World Cup and of course the 1998 World Cup with the opener - Scotland -v- Brazil, everything in Scotland shut down that day, even my office closed at lunchtime so we could all go home and watch the match. Despite leading Brazil 1-0 at one point Scotland's Tommy Boyd decided that the south americans needed some help and scored a spectacular own goal and that pretty much finished Scotland's participation in the World Cup. We live in hope though that we may return soon.
themaninblack 2,112 Posted September 14, 2013 If only more England supporters adopted some of that Tartan Army philosophy, then England matches/tournaments involving England would be more bearable. Alas it's "England expects" every time...
charon 4,943 Posted September 14, 2013 Although I'm the same age as LG, I actually remember the 74 Finals, a smidgeon of the Scots games and the final itself. So the west Germany v Holland game was the first I ever saw in colour as my old dad hadn't updated the house set. I was in the suffering general and had just had an op but the nurses wheeled me to the tv room, thick with ciggie smoke

Didn't play in a WC for Brazil but managed Morocco in '86 to the 2nd round. http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=193958 Forerunner to Bruno Metsu as he also converted to Islam at the time. Spade_Cooley 9,519 Posted October 15, 2013 .. really, other than Senegal's Cinderella run (and with that reference to Bruno Metsu we're back to deadpool territory again), what did that tournament have? Well, Metsu is no longer in deadpool territory as the lion of Teranga has laid down. I mean he's dead.
