themaninblack 2,112 Posted September 6, 2015 I had a dream that I managed to win by virtue of an obituary for Ed Drummond appearing in the Daily Telegraph on 31st December. I love the fact that you're still dreaming of winning the DDP...

Is that enough to get me points?? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-32026985 It's looking more convincing I must admit. I'm going to do more digging for verification (date of death etc) and then add him in for the next update. It can only be contradicted from now on...
Guest Pelican Posted September 7, 2015 Um, The Man In Black - as you're in a good mood.... I was wondering would an audio obit count? There are a lot of people who are covered on The Last Word on Radio 4 who don't even make an obit on the BBC website. As you can get all previous editions on the website would you accept this in the place of a written obit? If there's a link then it's valid... James Varda's death was spoken of on BBC Radio Ulster's folk show last month. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b064zt27 5mins and 40seconds in, but do stop and listen to the song which follows. James Varda was a very talented musician, remaining as obscure in death as he did in life. Peace APW

Because they're not the BBC. That's not my point. At the minute we exclude local news sources such as local radio, local newspapers and local websites on the basis anyone notable will get national recognition. If we say that this is the case except when the BBC's local output produces something then we're given the BBC a divine right superior to any other news outlet. Deathray 2,940 Posted September 7, 2015 Next year the rule will be refined in that there has be a mention in writing that a pick has died, even if it is a side bar... Still doesn't address the imbalance. If the Middleofnowhereshire Times reports that's Joe Bloggs has died on their website then that currently gets filed under List of the Lost. If the BBC Middleofnowhereshire local page reports that Joe Bloggs has died on the website that currently gets filed as a hit. It's unfair, regardless of your opinion on state news outlets and private news outletsboth of these institutions are intended for the same audience, the residents of Middleofnowhereshire and as such will reflect fame as seen by people in Middleofnowhereshire. The current rules provide a situation where a mildly notable chap from Middleofnowhereshire could die and the hit would be missed because it was report by the Middleofnowhereshire Times, whereas a few weeks later a equally notable chap dies and the hits granted because BBC Middleofnowhereshire reported it. How's that fair and equal treatment of news sources?

How's that fair and equal treatment of news sources? Some of my more obscure hits have been initially only picked up by local press and I worried that there would be no national obit but I understand why the rules would limit us to the BBC. They would be nationally backed by the reporting standards that apply to the national news. If we let local press in how local do we go. Every former counciller and 90 year old verge cutter would qualify as a hit. I think part of the skill of the game is to balance the unique picks against the news worthiness of their passing. I believe that every one on my long list should be worthy of a national obit but I am sometimes mistaken. The fact that Doctor Who writer Jane Baker didn't get one startled me. So, your suggestions/complaints please. I may take on board all, none or some of what will be said in preparation for next year, so fire away folks! Just as a matter of record I would like to point out that my argument would be in favour of the exclusion of local content of national organisations from the valid obits category rather than the extension to other local new sources, with second preference being such and extension followed by a least desirable scenario of the status quo. This is in the belief that the current rules provided to much room for ambulance chasers, obscure picks with a local following and a degree of bias. Historically the DDP has been a game about celebrity deaths, I feel allowing a mere mention on a BBC local radio programme has the elastic band of celebrity stretched to the point you could accommodate an elephant within the inner radius. May I also request clarification that any alterations to the rules made as a result of this open forum will be published before the nomination period for next year begins? Also may I suggest that in addition to the overall scoreboard and theme team league a scoreboard excluding theme teams is provided. Finally can I request that this Rules and Scoring page (available here: http://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/general/rules_and_scoring.html)on the site is ammended to display the rules of the current games as they stand as a point of reference for players rather than a frankly unhelpful "you're too late" message? gcreptile 10,970 Posted September 9, 2015 I think DDP-valid celebrities should cross a certain line of fame threshhold, so no local obits, only national ones. Banning the Daily Mail alone would be relatively useless, because the Mirror and the Daily Star or maybe Yahoo UK, would fill the gap, and the Daily Mail at least provides (copy/pastes) international obits from AP and Reuters. First, I thought about demanding that the name of the person should be in the headline of the post, which Shaun of the Dead also does now and hopefully, we'll see the advantages/disadvantages of that. But I could imagine that some notable people, especially of the "last of the XYZ" variety would fall through. Another idea to determine that fame threshhold (in addition to the obits) might be to demand the existence of a Wikipedia article in whatever language existing of that person BEFORE the year of team submission. So a person picked for the DDP 2016, and submitted in a team in late 2015, would need to have had a Wikipedia page in 2014 already. That's to prevent cheating by the contestant by creating a WIkipedia page at the time of (or shortly before) team submission. I guess checking the WIkipedia page is already part of the procedure, so I hope it's not too much trouble.

Spade_Cooley 9,525 Posted September 9, 2015 I think that Yahoo News should not be an accepted source, ditto HuffPo. Did we ever come to an agreement on whether The Scotsman and the Daily Record are valid sources?
msc 18,442 Posted September 9, 2015 I think we should allow Blogger and Wordpress. I can't see any possible way that would be abused by honest DDPers. Honestly, I wouldn't removed any of the Obituary sources. If someone appears on the local news but not the BBC local news, well, that's too bad. There's a nice crossbreed of them, from the Scottish dailys, to the US chasing Mail, to the proper broadsheets. But at the end of the day (and at the risk of being accused of being a suck up), it should be whatever the person in charge wants it to be. If they want to pour over the Dartmoor Chronicle for references to a cancer bride, so be it.
YoungWillz 21,044 Posted September 9, 2015 Hmm, as I recall the only place Stuart Wagstaff got a UK obit was the Daily Mail! After so long in the going, I thought things like this would have all been ironed out. I'm mainly for the status quo, under exception of the famous for being ill/famous for fundraising and being ill/famous for getting married to or being a member of a family of someone who is ill. Admittedly, I think it's 2 hits this year who have qualified to 1 which has been lost, so it's not a large proportion so far. The people who have had fame and celebrity or notoriety can or have to take it (this isn't the kindest forum at times!), people simply struck down by affliction who get a small amount of media attention in the great scheme of things aren't. If they are not worthy of a thread of their own in this forum (not that they have to have a thread of their own), they are not worthy of a place in the DDP. I'd probably dump the Daily Record as a source - not sure one hit has come from there this year. Edit: If the state targets a terrorist in a strike, does that count as a state execution? Tuppence spent.
