Ideas And Possibilities For 2016

Recommended Posts

What about the Chands? They celebrate their 90th wedding anniversary later this year!!! They live in Bradford & he is nearly 110 & she is about 103 I think. Their W/A is so rare that it does not have a special name as Oak for 80th is the 'largest' special name. Apart from a couple who were married as children & Wiki states that they were married for 91 years no other couple appear to have ever passed around 85 years of marital union!

An American site states that there are currently 2 living grandsons of John Tyler who was US President from 1841-45!!! It also states that there are still 2 surviving children of American Civil War veterans even though the war ended in 1865!!!

I don't recall names, but about 2004 the last Civil War widow died. See back then, the old vets got a pension and some destitute girl would be 'taken care of' (somehow for $4/month or something lol) and it was a courtesy marriage to allow the benefit to pass to the wife. So there were more than a few instances of an 80-yr old Civil War get (b 1844 let's say) marrying an 18-yr old; obviously a couple times, including the last surviving widow, they conceived a child. So when she died at 95 or so in 2004, she had a son who was 72 or so. My immediate thought was "GODDAMN he could STILL have a kid and that kid would live circa 2005-2100 and say their grandfather fought in the Civil War!!!!!!"

Sadly to my knowledge no such conception has occurred. But no doubt that a couple children of Civil War vets are walking the Earth.

That obit I mentioned in the classical music thread drew my attention to Sir Neville Marriner. He's 91 years old now, but at least for now, in good shape. He's also recently become a Companion of Honor.

Keep an eye on Rory Dodd (vocalist - sang with Bonnie Tyler on Total Eclipse of the Heart).

The best of all the years have gone by and now he's only falling apart.

Legendary jockey Randy Romero has about a year left to live if he doesn't receive a new liver:

If that doesn't kill him, the newly discovered tumour in his stomach might. Or his hepatitis C. Or his failing kidneys. Or the aftereffects of his numerous surgeries.

Two former UN Secretary Generals, both in their 90s, still living:

Javier Pérez de Cuéllar (age 95) Boutros Boutros-Ghali (age 92)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_P%C3%A9rez_de_Cu%C3%A9llar

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boutros_Boutros-Ghali

Both would be good candidates for 2016. Opinions? Obituaries would be a non-issue as both were once important figures in international politics.

Good thinking Guest. I don't think any of us had considered either of these before.....

I wasn't sure if you were being facetious or not, it's difficult to guage at times. I think Boutros Boutros-Ghali has been on the list in the past as there were some issues with his health a few years ago.

I have always assumed that a line of trailing dots conveyed that the explanation had been left unsaid in an ironic fashion. YMMV.

I didn't even notice the trailing dots.

Please confirm that the smiley face is an inherent appreciation of the irony of my post and that in an equally ironic fashion you have posted something that appears to be a contrary inane statement of fact but is in face so subtly witty Oscar Wilde himself would rise from his grave to shake your hand.

Not sure if this has been said elsewhere, but Sir Peter Hall has been suffering with dementia since 2011. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3156911/SEBASTIAN-SHAKESPEARE-Secret-illness-stage-giant-Sir-Peter-Hall-heckled-Downton-star.html

Yeah, he thinks he's Peter Graves,. right?

I have only once been to see a Peter Hall production but we went on the opening night driving from Cheltenham to Stratford when we got there they announced that the play wasn't ready and we could either have our money back or get tickets for the following night (which we did).

The show was full of teething troubles. It was Julius Caeser and the role of Caeser was played by Christopher Benjamin. The stage was dominated by a bust of Caeser's and it was meant to leak blood but the blood was too thin and tuned into a torrent dripping from the head which drowned out the actor's lines. When the poet was killed by the mob the crowd parted to early to reveal a stage hand with a bucket of blood to pour down the steps and Hugh Quarshie (Mark Anthony) was just terrible. Julian Glover (Brutus) was good though.

I think Sir Peter Hall is a bit full of himself to be honest.

Thanks for the heads up.

Mexican singer/songrwriter Joan Sebastian is currently hospitalized and undergoing cancer treatment, but not yet in critical condition, according to his son:

http://www.latintimes.com/joan-sebastian-hospitalized-julian-figueroa-son-confirms-singer-undergoing-cancer-308202

Also, happy birthday!

if he has cancer will his death get orbit in the UK media

I'm not sure, he has won multiple Grammy's and Latin Grammy's though

Now we know, the answer is yes:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-3160218/Mexican-ballad-singer-Joan-Sebastian-dies-age-64.html

I'm surprised how even my marginal suggestions die faster than I'd like to. (Edit: I know it's already been posted, but I wanted to answer the question above.)

Edit: Even the BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-33519929
