Mechanical calculator

You can't fool me that's a sausage maker not a calculator.

Anyway assuming that one can use a calculator or even google in the workplace, what exactly are they testing in these exams? An ability to remember specifics that in practice you'll never actually need to remember?

They really need to to be testing whether you can ask the right question in the appropriate situation surely? More, this is a situation where a differential equation or trig would provide the way forward than any ability to do the hard maths without assistance.

Of course, this is much harder to test and is a whole other argument.

It wasn't a problem in my day. :D We all managed to get home without one too.

Seriously - there is no need for a child to use a mobile phone while at school.

They were still Phoneboxes through. My old school is near a Main Street that used to have three phone boxes - all are gone now.

There isn't, but it's a societal necessity these days, bit like football cards were when I was a kid. No-one needed them, but life was a lot easier if you had them.

Listening to Badenoch in the House.

What's the betting she ends up doing an Amber Rudd and has to go for misleading the Commons? I mean, this is the woman who is supposed to have hacked Harriet Harman's phone or computer or some such device and got away with it.

Somebody somewhere is either leaking truths about her or wants her ambitions stopped. Imo.

In the days of Amber Rudd, politicians were obliged to resign for misleading the Commons. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case since Honking Pudding's time as PM. All standards have fucked clean off.

To tee up Fucking Good Job Gillian's school phones 'policy', Dr Death posted this promo:

Given that our country has become a reactionary, stagnating, polluted, crumbling, asset-stripped, neoliberal hellscape, they aren't doing a very good job.

An unfinished poem on the Tory parliamentary trajectory (by sillytees on Twitter, shared on Threads). His bit only goes to 71 and the Tory majority is now down to 55 so feel free to add your own verses :D

One Tory Majority

Of 80, more than fine

One got his willy out

Which left them 79

A 79 majority

Is really jolly great

One was caught groping men

And now it’s 78

78 more seats than you

We’re in political heaven

Then one blew a 15-year-old

The maj. is 77

77 Tories

Up to their usual tricks

Taking cash for questions

It’s down to 76

76 old Tories

Some barely still alive

1 watched porn in the chamber

They’re left with 75

75 Right Wingers

One can take it no more

Quit before he’s suspended

There’s only 74

A 74 majority

As safe as one could be

3 women make the same complaint

It drops to 73

73 Elected Tories

All decent through and through

An intern gets sent filthy texts

There’s only 72

72 Blue MPS

It should be 71

Cos one of ‘em’s accused of rape,

But we’ve not been told which one

RE: mobile phones in schools.

When I was in school, I had an iPod for my music and a phone that I barely used because it was 777744444833 but was useful in case of emergency. Got a smartphone before starting college.

Kids don’t need to have their own smartphones and social media. Parents are responsible for setting up parental controls and monitoring activity on devices at home. Give them a brick for school.

Not easy to actually buy non smartphones now a days except for the burner variety.

It won’t be too long until TFL in London make using a smartphone compulsory to access transport and discontinue physical Oyster cards.

We had a brick for emergency contact but it became surplus to requirements as every major network around here stopped providing the lower network keeping the signal for the old school phones. Even luddite me had to upgrade to a smartphone.

A fair and interesting account of Keir Starmer as a person here. Obvs he's flawed, but it is reassuring to think the incoming PM is not rotten to the core like current one and the vast majority of former ones in living memory.
