Deathrace 1,171 Posted January 12, 2019 That was horrible to watch and listen to. Supposedly not exactly the nicest person in Hollywood but I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.
natquen 46 Posted January 25, 2019 Poor Val. I'm a speech pathologist - but not a specialist in voice/laryngectomy. It seems apparent that Val has had a neck dissection (where the lymph nodes in the neck are removed) - hence why his neck looks very 'thin'. It seems the tumour/s and/or the treatment (surgery, radiotherapy) has/have affected the function of his soft palate - which elevates during speech and closes off the nasal cavity (except for the nasal sounds, which are m, n, and ng in English); hence why he sounds so 'nasal'. It also seems he has some issue with managing his oral secretions (hence the sleeve wipe), and has a reduced range of moment on the right* side of his face and with opening his jaw. (*this video is shot in mirror image)

Deathrace 1,171 Posted September 3, 2019 Looks like he's put on a bit of weight which may be a good sign. His legs don't look too bad either and he's a bit less frail looking.

msc 18,476 Posted July 6, 2021 Documentary coming out about Val Kilmer's cancer battle. In remission now but now needs a voice box to communicate. As long term advocate of the "he's not that ill" brigade: he wont see 70.

time 8,605 Posted May 21, 2022 Has anyone seen Top Gun: Maverick yet? How's Val look (though given that the film's been years in the making we probably shouldn't infer too much)?
adrian0719 223 Posted June 3, 2022 All dialogue from Top Gun: Maverick was read by AI as Val can no longer speak due to throat cancer complications.
msc 18,476 Posted June 3, 2022 Yeah he couldn't speak without the voice box in that documentary. The voice isn't coming back. He's clearly a hardy soul to still be around, but he wont get close to 70 imo.
Perhaps 1,423 Posted December 5, 2022 Unsurprisingly unable to reprise his role in 'Willow' due to "insurmountable" health issues and can't seem to risk catching COVID. https://www.nme.com/news/tv/val-kilmer-was-forced-to-leave-willow-reboot-due-to-insurmountable-health-problems-3359831 1
