Sean 6,365 Posted July 17, 2015 I thought it was about time the Cinematographer Douglas Slocombe had his own thread. He turns 103 next February is virtually blind and looks very frail indeed. He was also a photojournalist and covered the beginning of WW2 before working on many films such as the First three Indiana Jones films ,Julia ,The Italian job ,The Great Gatsby and Jesus Christ Superstar amongst many others. He won 3 BAFTAS and was nominated for 3 Oscars. Given the high profile of his movies and his acclaim from BAFTA I would be astounded if his eventual demise was not covered by all the major news sites/Papers in Britain .Gil Taylor another famous cinematographer received a good amount of attention when he died and I think Slocombe would be the same .I think he is definitely a must have for next years list if he makes it that far. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-28983004 :An interview with the BBC last September. http://www.bscine.com/2013/douglas-slocombe-bsc-celebrates-his-100th-birthday/ :100th Birthday report. http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2009/dec/13/douglas-slocombe-tribute-philip-french :Guardian article on him being honoured by BAFTA. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/72823000/jpg/_72823007_slocombe-2011.jpg :Picture from 2011.

Sean 6,365 Posted July 18, 2015 I think 3 Bafta`s and 3 Academy Nominations sets him apart from many other centenarians living today.
msc 18,536 Posted July 18, 2015 I think 3 Bafta`s and 3 Academy Nominations sets him apart from many other centenarians living today. He'll get the BBC Breaking News twitter when he dies for his work on the Indiana Jones trilogy, the Bond connection and the Italian Job. However, his work on Dead of Night, Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Titfield Thunderbolt earlier in his career showed great style in his eye for the aesthetic shot. All of the films above would have been lesser without him. Incidentally, if you've never heard of any of those latter films (pre-empting here), I recommend them. Dead of Night is a pre-Hammer era horror portmanteau, featuring a killer dummy, a remarkably faithful adaptation of E.F. Benson, and random comedy. Kind Hearts has Alec Guinness in about a dozen roles, and the Thunderbolt is about trying to save a train, before Beeching had even started his massacre.

I second the recommendation for Kind Hearts And Coronets, it's a very dark comedy, funny and bleak in places. Great film.
Toast 16,232 Posted July 18, 2015 I could have sworn there was a Cinematographers thread, but perhaps it was another one that got merged with something else.

Sean 6,365 Posted July 29, 2015 https://twitter.com/PerceptionFilms/status/623516149880369153 Apparently gave an interview recently.Pretty impressive for 102. Doesn`t look any worse in the pictures so he may stick around for next year. Then again Peter O`Sullevan was giving interviews a couple of months ago. So, given his condition and Iain Duncan Smith's war on scroungers, he'd still be passed fit for work by the DWP, right?

Possibly as he still has his marbles they might say he is capable of something but I can`t think of any jobs around for blind people in wheelchair`s unless it is filling a diversity quota at the BBC or something.Shame their PC quotas didn`t exist in the 70`s.If they had employed more blind people in wheelchairs there would have been a lot less peadophilia going on.
