Spade_Cooley 9,474 Posted October 13, 2015 Frank Kelly, who has fought bowel cancer in the past, has now been diagnosed with Parkinson's. This thread will also, presumably, double as a thread for Irish TV character actors. If one of the more listmania posters on the site could do the honours via IMDB that'd be appreciated.

Bibliogryphon 9,509 Posted October 13, 2015 I didn't watch Father Ted and I have not heard of many of these actors but two stand out Derrick Branche played the asian nurse in Only When I Laugh and Jim Norton played numerous roles on Babylon 5 (if it is the same one I am thinking of)

He's fairly recognisable. Most of the actors are Irish ones, so obscure outwith the show. Otherwise, Vernon Dobtcheff is the casino owner who Jaws kills in The Spy Who Loved Me, the Scientist in the Doctor Who story The War Games, and thousands of other roles. Richard Wilson is Victor Meldrew. Gerard Murphy was in Silver Nemesis and Denys Hawthorne in Terror of the Vervoids (both Dr Who). Peter Caffrey was in Ballykissangel, Clare Grogan is a former pop star (Altered Images) who was in Gregory's Girl, and Graham Norton and Tommy Tiernan are now internationally renowned comics...somehow. Oh, and Declan Mulhullond was a drunk who once played Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars. Father Ted is great, one of the finest sitcoms ever made. And entirely accurate too.
Spade_Cooley 9,474 Posted October 13, 2015 Vernon Dobtcheff turns up in La Grande Bellezza, which really took me out of that film for a bit.

Federation president in Blake's 7 series 2 (Shadow) Never mind that shit, he played the first character in Doctor Who to mention the Time Lords (The War Games, episode 6).
Toast 16,063 Posted October 13, 2015 I didn't watch Father Ted and I have not heard of many of these actors but two stand out Derrick Branche played the asian nurse in Only When I Laugh and Jim Norton played numerous roles on Babylon 5 (if it is the same one I am thinking of) Then you need to remedy the situation without delay. Because of the untimely death of Dermot Morgan who played the title character, there were only three series. 24 episodes in all plus one Christmas special. You have a treat in store.
Handrejka 1,903 Posted October 13, 2015 Vernon Dobtcheff turns up in La Grande Bellezza, which really took me out of that film for a bit. Federation president in Blake's 7 series 2 (Shadow) He'll always bee the Concierge in Murder on the Orient Express to me. Count me in as another fan of Father Ted. I still sometimes forget that Dermot Morgan is dead.

The Mad Hatter 1,092 Posted October 13, 2015 Father Ted is the best TV programme ever made by Channel 4 and I know to some that doesn't mean anything much, it's still is...indeed I haven't watched an episode where I haven't laughed out loud
Bibliogryphon 9,509 Posted October 13, 2015 I have seen some episodes I like the Beast of Craggy Island which Father Dougal has to put on his list of things that don't exist along with Darth Vader and non-Catholic Gods. I enjoyed what I saw. Early Channel 4 had some really great comedy like Chelmsford 123 & The Big One seems to have lost its way seriously in the past few years. Imelda 610 Posted January 25, 2016 Well well well, I Google a list of old comedy programmes on Channel 4 and some saddo (my kind of saddo) has made a comprehensive list http://www.comedy.co.uk/guide/network/c4/ Ted is a good shout for best-ever, though a quick glance of the list shows some excellent competition: Adam & Joe Show Armstrong And Miller Bad Sugar Black Mirror Brass Eye Drop The Dead Donkey Inbetweeners IT Crowd Jack Dee Show Nathan Barley Peep Show Phoenix Nights Star Stories Teachers (well, series 1&2) Whose Line Is It Anyway? A tidy collection of boxsets there for most people.
