CaptainChorizo 1,976 Posted October 28, 2015 Suggestions for possible 1st timers Americanos Sumner Redstone-Like Kirk Kerkorian last year maybe not a big enough name but relatives are already vulturing for his money in court and a guranteed qualifying orbit if he croaks Beverly Clearly-Turns 100 next year. Her Ramona Quimby books were read by American schoolkids for decades Holly Woodlawn&Jimmy Carter- Have Brain Cancer and if still alive on Jan 1 are dead certain not to survive the year Film Directors (No Directors have made the list since Michael Winner a few years ago) Jonas Mekas-b. 1922- Godfather of Avant Garde Cinema in Usa looks likes death already in recent photos Jacques Rivette-b. 1928-One of the last living Directors of the French New Wave has not been seen public in the last few years Lewis Gilbert-b 1920 -The Spy Who Loved Me Director looked pretty frail in a clip of him being interviewed on youtube in 2013 Musicians/Composers (An underrepresented group on the deathlist) Ennio Morricone-b 1928 Greatest living film composer had to cancel tour dates in 2014 for health reasons Toots Thielemans-b 1922 Jazz Icon who cancelled concert dates in 2014 for health reasons and looks frail in recent photos Also would meet quota for a token Belgian spot Pierre Henry-b 1927 Pioneer of Electronic Music/Obese Jerry Lee Lewis-b 1935/ 50s Icons of Rock N Roll http://assets.rollingstone.com/assets/2014/article/the-killer-at-peace-jerry-lee-lewis-golden-years-20141104/173611/medium_rect/1415117540/720x405-McClister_JerryLeeLewis_1618.jpg Lewis looks sorta like Johnny Cash did his last few years Non UK/USA Females (Since women seem to be outnumbered most years by a 4-1 or 5-1 ratio) Liliane Bettencourt-b 1922 Worlds Richest Woman Suffers from Dementia and Alzheimers Setsuko Hara-b 1920 Icon of Japanese and World Cinema Danielle Darrieux-b 1917 Icon of French Cinema Monica Vitti-1931 Has had Alzheimers since 2000
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted October 28, 2015 Great choices overall. One small correction is that Jerry Lee Lewis has been on the list before. I think backing early rock and rollers up to and including the British Invasion, will be a fairly safe choice over the next few years as their lifestyles catch up with them. Some other comments: "Sumner Redstone-Like Kirk Kerkorian last year maybe not a big enough name" - I think he is well-known enough for the list. I am certainly well aware of him. "Jacques Rivette-b. 1928-One of the last living Directors of the French New Wave" - great choice! Who else is still around besides Godard? "Monica Vitti-1931" - I keep thinking Vitti had died from her Alzheimer's because I keep mixing her up with Annie Girardot.
RadGuy 1,614 Posted October 28, 2015 It's not too early. If we start planning 2 months ahead of time, we can come up with a great list.
gcreptile 10,963 Posted October 28, 2015 I think the gender gap needs to be closed somewhat, there need to be more women on the list (especially since the mortality rate for women is just as high as for men - 100%). And I believe that an appropriate criterion for "Death List eligibility" should be a BBC obit in most cases. But putting those two together is hard. Eva Marie Saint is an obvious possibility. Joni Mitchell, probably not, if the reports about her recovery are correct. Maybe Imelda Marcos, or Gina Lollobrigida. Outside chances for Vanessa Redgrave or Honor Blackman. I like how this year saw a certain decline in the names that were solely on the list because of their age - for one, we can replace them with other names prominent and old enough, especially Hugh Hefner. Maybe also Sir Neville Marriner, Obligatory random names to increase diversity: Sir Jeremy Morse, Judith Kerr, Boutros-Boutros Ghali, Jihadi John, Lord Carrington, Albert Uderzo
Vaagheid 141 Posted October 28, 2015 I was thinking about this the other day (more in a "I wonder if the committee is already picking names and making a shortlist"-way) I am surprised no one mentioned Johan Cruijff here yet. why is that? Is he not Deathlist-material or is he not sick enough?
gcreptile 10,963 Posted October 28, 2015 I am surprised no one mentioned Johan Cruijff here yet. why is that? Is he not Deathlist-material or is he not sick enough? For me, he's such an obvious candidate that it doesn't even need to be mentioned, like Howard Marks or Jimmy Carter.
Death Impends 7,953 Posted October 28, 2015 Not much on him healthwise besides "he old" but I'd like to see John Glenn on, if only because I don't think DL has ever had an astronaut before and there aren't many of those left (Aldrin being another) who "feel" like they could be on the front page.
Ulitzer95 12,568 Posted October 28, 2015 I would suggest Lupita Tovar, Rhonda Fleming and Eva Marie Saint. We should be trying to catch as many of the actors/actresses from the Hollywood Golden Era as there are not an awful lot left.
Sean 6,309 Posted October 28, 2015 Ok here is my full judgements for what they are worth: Keep on the List: 1)Herman Wouk 2)João Havelange 3)Olivia de Havilland 4)Kirk Douglas 5)Zsa Zsa Gabor 6)Vera Lynn 7)Billy Graham 8)Helmut Schmidt 9)Al Molinaro 10)Cliff Michelmore 11)Peter Sallis 12)Prince Philip 13)Nancy Reagan 14)Jake LaMotta 15)Liz Smith 16)Denis Norden 17)Henry Kissenger 18)Leslie Philips 19)George Bush Senior 20)Fidel Castro 21)Bhumibol Adulyadej 22)Helmut Kohl 23)Valerie Harper 24)Clive James 25)Joost van der Westhuizen Bring Back: 1)Peter Carrington 2)Abe Vigoda 3)Pierre Cardin 4)Stan Lee 5)Jerry Lewis 6)Fats Domino 7)Desmond Tutu 8)Stephen Hawking 9)Muhammad Ali New entries/ 1)Clare Hollingworth 2)Douglas Slocombe 3)David Rockefeller 4)Lady Mary Wilson 5)Jacque Fresco 6)I.M Pei 7)Diana Serra Carey 8)Sheila Mercier 9)Carol Channing 10)Boutros Boutros Ghali 11)Sumner Redstone 12)Jimmy Carter 13)Warren Mitchell 14)Greville Janner 15)Jimmy Hill 16)Howard Marks Yes I am aware I am contradicting myself from previous posts here but I promise not to speculate further for the rest of the year.Just goes to show how difficult the decisions are when it comes down to it.Unless something massive changes such as a "national treasure" is diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer or something. Below: Three substitutes who I think will probably not even make it to the starting line 1)Ian Brady 2)Huston Smith 3)Holly Woodlawn 4)Rene Angelil 5)Martin Crowe
msc 18,421 Posted October 28, 2015 Not much on him healthwise besides "he old" but I'd like to see John Glenn on, if only because I don't think DL has ever had an astronaut before and there aren't many of those left (Aldrin being another) who "feel" like they could be on the front page. He had a minor heart op last year. Reading news in autograph hunting circles, he was replying to fanmail in January, but by April this year he was "unable to accept autograph requests any longer". This chimes with rumours a while ago on Twitter he was in poor health, and the Daily Mails report from May that Glenn had suffered a minor stroke. I wouldn't exactly jump him ahead of the queue, though. [That said, there's smoke enough that he'd warrant a spot more than, say, Charles Aznavour.]

Toast 16,124 Posted October 28, 2015 Outside chances/less obitable in the UK: Lou Richards/Margaret Fulton/Bert Newton/Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen/Judith Durham Judith Durham will get a UK obit, no question about that at all.
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted October 28, 2015 Yes she's more of an outside chance now though as she seems to have bounced back a bit. I guess she's our Aussie equivalent to Joni Mitchell at this stage - old folkies dancing on the edge of the grave.

Whilst I agree with a few of those outright, Lamotta has been on every single Deathlist since 2004 and Castro has raked up 4 straight appearances and 12 in total so I only see one way in which both will leave the list. They seem to keep the long timers on now, after missing out on Patrick Moore. I could see Eddie Large and Ken Kercheval appearing in the great list of "one time only" Deathlist candidates, like Peter Tork.
