ITDY 20 Posted August 24, 2012 http://www.dw.de/dw/article/0,,16184548,00.html Georg Leber former German defence minister and member of Helmut Schmidt's cabinet has bit the big one. Schmidt next please (and take Merkel with you)
Bibliogryphon 9,586 Posted August 24, 2012 I think that Eric Pickles might be the next recipient of the Cook-Dewar prize for Death in Political Office. He is certainly not the oldest member of the cabinet but the photo that graced the cover of i last week made him look unhealthy. I would be interested to know if you think that any of his cabinet colleagues would be more likely to go. (This is highly theoretical as deaths of serving cabinet ministers are very rare)

Magere Hein 1,400 Posted August 24, 2012 (This is highly theoretical as deaths of serving cabinet ministers are very rare) Last time that happened in the Netherlands was in 1986, when Koos Rietkerk, Minister of the Interior and aged 60, died in office, from a heart attack, IIRC. One Dutch Prime Minister died in office, Thorbecke. This man is highly regarded in Dutch political history. His name is almost synonymous with the 1848 state reform, in which the political principle of ministerial reponsibility in was introduced and all political power removing from the king. Hie died in 1872 from pneumonia, aged 74. Oh, and he wasn't handsome: regards, Hein

LOL Thanks for the detail about Dutch political reform I now feel better informed and slightly chastised as I was being very parochial as I was thinking of the British Cabinet and the devolved parliaments. Looks like a good pick for 2013 Not necessarily, the French government will be quite anxious to get their hands on him I imagine. Would be interesting to know also what guarantees were given to the Mauritanian government regarding his extradition, perhaps taking the death penalty off the table was one of them
