Also he retired from the House of Lords a couple of years ago at a relatively young age by house of lords standards.

That was more to do with money! But in general, he's been on my longlist for a decade now for a reason.

That's what I assumed at time but always could be because of health.

One of the more recognisable backbenchers in the 90s. I keep picking the wrong MPs on the DDP! Radice retired abruptly recently so was probably on folks radar.

The last surviving MP who represented the now abolished constituency of Chester-le-Street.

Now they're all In-le-Ground.

Just back from being away.

Radice always came across as being that privileged thinker rather than doer, remind you of Starmer as he is now, anyone?

Certainly contemptuous of the working classes he claimed to represent, but then long standing voting for anything with a red ribbon on his lapel will do that.  Probably more centre right than most of his contemporaries. How an unlikeable sort like that got voted in time and again, who knows?

Tadeusz Ferenc, mayor of Rzeszów, Poland from 2002 to 2021, has died at 82 (link in Polish).

Ferenc oversaw the development of Rzeszów, capital of the Subcarpathian province, from a small regional center into a rapidly developing metropolis; Rzeszów is one of the fastest growing cities in a country where most cities are losing population or stagnant.

Ferenc was a member of the Democratic Left Alliance and it was practically a miracle that he remained in power for so long in Poland's most conservative province. His leadership proved popular enough that he was succeeded by a fellow leftist.

Parliament is full of unlikeable people of dubious motivations and probably always was.

They updated it saying he had to attend a funeral of a special agent.

Some of these went on to have ministerial careers such as Richard Caborn and other are already on the radar like Ian Paisley but assembling a DDP team from this lot would be a leap of faith as many will be tocuh and go for an Obit. However if you have spies in the local press then this could be a good source of information.

The 1979 elections were held on the First past the post principal with constituencys being roughly approximated to counties it is only in later elections that we get the regional approach and a move to the D'Hondt system.

Updated @Bibliogryphon's neglected list  (sorry :Pof Britain's first set of elected MEPs for the death of Anthony Simpson (wiki), a Conservative MEP (1979–1994) who has died aged 86.

He was probably the most obscure name on the above list, meaning that they all have a good chance of getting a Times or Telegraph death notice at the very least.

This lot don't seem like they're in a rush to die. 17/53 of them gone in 8 years despite the mean age being high.

36 remaining. Just one thing to say... "Stop the World Reaper, Winnie Wants to Get Off". :D

Started reading that years ago and never finished it. Unusual for me and political memoirs. Will return to it one day. No spoilers though, can't wait to see if Scotland becomes independent or not at the end of the book! :D

Latest on this:

The report is made by the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital, which was due to be submitted by March. "Expert opinions have not yet been prepared. The deadline for the end of the investigation has been postponed to June 5, 2022, "said Aleš Cimbala, a spokesman for the council, two weeks ago.

Along with 97-year-old former Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia Lubomir Strougal and 91-year-old former Interior Minister Vratislav Vajnar also Jan Fojtík, 94-year-old former parliament member and "leading party ideologist" will be examined.

I guess it'll be postponed again a few times until Strougal dies.

They've finally gotten the expert opinions:

Lubomir Strougal, 97, only suffers from "mild dementia" but can't understand the criminal proceedings. can only understand the meaning of criminal proceedings in a very general, formal and imprecise way, and only at a certain time of day and in the calm of the home environment.

Jan Fojtík, 94, suffers from senile dementia and is in even worse condition than Strougal.

Vratislav Vajnar, 91, suffers from a mild cognitive impairment, but well enough to be prosecuted.

Cristina Kirchner, former President of Argentina 2007-2015, VP since 2019 and widow of Nestor Kirchner, President 2003-2007 hospitalised before legislative elections for hysterectomy.

Has a small health history: bipolar disorder with mania periods, thyroid cancer 2011 (possibly misdiagnosed) that lead into the removal of her thyroid gland, head injury in 2012 and subdural hematoma in 2013.

Added to Kirchner's medical woes itemised previously, she's escaped an attempted assassination as the would-be assassin's gun jammed.

It's not often I would post the death of a local politician. But this has to be done.

Death Notice for John Corbet-Singleton aged 94, Tory Councillor first elected to Kensington And Chelsea Council in 1956 and a former Lord Mayor for the area: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/259299/corbet-singleton

So here's a story the Daily Mail did on him from 2018, about a Homeshare scheme which paired folks from different generations to share living space: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5332445/Britains-unlikely-flatmates-Poppy-24-John-89.html

I wonder if Poppy has moved on before this or is now looking for new digs. And think of the poor relatives of John, who will have to decide what to do with that five storey Regency townhouse a stone's throw from the King's Road. :P
