Sounds like they skeptical he is genuinely ill. It’s unusual for the broadsheets to prominently do the read between the lines type of reporting that tabloids do more . A few notes on him – former leader of Stirling Council (1991–1995), very well liked across the political divide (e.g. he was the only Tory to be invited to former First Minister Jack McConnell's 40th birthday bash), defected to the neoliberal "New Party" in 2003 with MSP colleague Lyndsay McIntosh. Later retired to Brittany from 2004, where he was active before dying from a sudden illness.
