I’d guess the least hits first, and then who knows what. I don’t think this will end in a draw though...

A lot of these are good suggestions. I will choose not to actually comment on them though in the unlikely event that this tie continues. I wouldn't want to have a voice that influences my own win in unfair circumstances.

My plan if the tie remains - award the win to both teams, as I feel it's the most fair route in light of no preestablished rule for ties. However this will not remain permanent, and I will institute a tiebreaker rule for 2019.

I've not necessarily thought this through but it makes sense off the top of my head: how about giving the win to whoever had the last "hit" (presumably this would be whichever of the tied players was most recently winning/closest to winning), on the basis that picking someone who dies later in the year is, arguably, a better bad pick than someone who dies earlier in the year? If Player 1 gets one hit in December, and Player 2 gets one hit in February, then in lieu of any other information, I'd say Player 1 was the "better" player. Someone who dies just short of the finishing line was at least close to being a good pick.

 

If they had the same last hit, then second last, third last, fourth last etc. If both teams have the exact same hits (including if both teams manage to get 0), then whoever submitted their team first (or more specifically, whoever finalised their team first, after accounting for mistakes and duplicates or whatever).

Hmm. Assuming no more deaths, my randomly selected team actually did a fair bit better than the statistical expectancy for a random team (15 deaths * mean expected score of 6.25 per death = 93.75). That's the luck of the draw for you.

And with the year concluded, I can now proclaim @machotrouts the winner! Despite picking the most expected hit in the pool in John McCain, he only selected two other fatalities - Denis Norden and Stephen Hawking, with all 3 in the bottom 9 spots. And despite picking Hawking, he also steered clear of the other two of the three most popular hits (Aretha Franklin and Stan Lee).

 

I also feel it merits mention that @paddyfool 's randomly generated team - despite finishing only above five other teams - managed to be the only team to correctly call Leah Bracknell and Marieke Vervoort surviving the year!

 

The thread for Inverse 2019 will open sometime in the next few days, after Hartlepool matters are sorted.
