Words We Dislike

Recommended Posts

Not exactly germane to this thread but I dislike it when people are relating a phone conversation and make their hand into a telephone.  I don't know why it should bug me but it does.

Yeah, and despite the fact they’ve got an iPhone X they morph their hand into the shape of a phone from the 1980’s.

As a side note, I’m guilty of this one, stupidly.

"Saddened"

What's wrong with "sad"?

Verb vs adjective; when would you use sad rather than saddened?

I was saddened to hear that blahblahblah  v.  I was sad to hear that blahblahblah

"Saddened" just sounds a bit half-hearted to me.

It probably is - people don't want to crowd yer grief but don't want to come across as hard-hearted bastardos either.....

Bandwidth. This seems to be word of the week at work. “We don’t have the bandwidth”. I just wish people would speak English and say ‘time’ instead.

What utter bollocks.

That’s not a word—that’s a pronunciation, which is a whole different can of worms (there’s a phrase for you!)

I have some sympathy for bachelorette. I think here we are trying to make out the difference between a woman who is single and having fun (bachelorette) from one who stays home night after night with her 7 cats dreaming about the day she will finally be able to wear her mother's wedding dress which is 5 sizes too small and stinks of naphthalene (spinster).  Otherwise if anyone deems her marital status germane to the conversation she would merely be single.

FACT. (n) A word used by keyboard warriors when asserting a (usually erroneous) belief.

Not to be confused with 'fact' or 'Fact' (or 'facked').

Falkirk. A place Scottish people tell you to go to, when pissed off. "Get tae Falkirk!" At least, I assume that's what they're trying to say.

Not strictly a single word, but I find it infuriating when people won't simply state the age of a child, but insist on using school jargon which is unfathomable to those of us of a certain age.

I haven't a clue what Year 7 or Year 12 means, why can't they just say a ten-year-old or whatever.

Yours grumpily

Words that I hate are mostly when listening to people mispronouncing them! Some notable examples of words that piss me the hell off:

-When people say Ignorant meaning to say Rude because they are "Ignorant to knowing what Rude and Ignorant means" which is actually kind of Ironic

- When people say Suposably instead of Supposedly  (even though I have now since learned that something can be Supposable...and it is a word..but still wrong technically)

Expresso....just....no

-Expecially instead of Especially

JUST UGH

Fronting or Fronting up.

Every article I read about Australia's ignominious attempts to doctor the ball in the last Test vs. South Africa bangs on about Smith and Bancroft 'fronting' or 'fronting up' to the media. What an absolutely ghastly term.
