At what point does someone deserve their own thread?

Recommended Posts

You know, had Bain not been in his final moments when his thread was made, I wouldn’t be against it as he definitely would’ve gotten a lot of interesting conversations about him. The likes of Cappotelli or Joey Feek (for example) don’t really deserve their own thread...

1. Are they ill (and I mean ILL not hangnail rushed to hospital for heat exhaustion, I mean ill having something called a 'di-ag-no-sis'.  In fact let's use that as a rule.  The person needs a diagnosis of either an inoperable, incurable, or terminal illness.  Anything less isn't ill enough for a thread.  Obviously heart attacks strokes etc, if BAD (not Kevin Smith e.g.), can be substituted.  Really Fn old may take the place of illness, but let's say at least 95 for that to kick in.

I agree with most of your points, SC, except your point 1 quoted above.  If a person is interesting enough and regularly newsworthy, then I think they may be worth discussing without ticking your illness box.  Some people have lifestyles or family history that puts them at risk of premature death.  And people often die unexpectedly for all sorts of reasons, not least because they have kept their diagnosis confidential.

  You mean you missed it?

Someone did indeed start such a thread, but it was swiftly merged into the First Ladies thread.

LOL oh that's right.  SMH.  Sorry state of affairs around here.

I think you could argue Feek didn't deserve one.  Cappotelli is Feek Light.  Feek was nominated for a Grammy at the time of her death though, so I guess currently relevant.  But I'm ok saying she didn't deserve a thread.

Nominated for a Grammy means no thread.

Nominated for a Gammy, probable thread.

It would also be really good if threads were started for people that most of us have actually heard of.

That's nowhere near a deathsperm melt down and is no worse than what the likes of charon and yourself post regularly.

It's rather sad that you took time out of your obviously monotonous and boring life to add text to that photograph...

Anyway, too much risk of scraping a ballsack on that necklace...

Personal rules:

1) Are they someone who will attract any interesting discussion? Cliff Richard probably isn't going to drop dead any time soon, but there's always lots of rumour and innuendo about him

2) Are they actually famous? Threads for the second bass player from The Bluetones probably aren't valuable

3) Are they in the public eye? Threads about hermits won't work, which is why I wouldn't start a, say, Bobbie Gentry thread. However, Jenny Ditski got a thread from me because she was very vocal on Twitter during her final months.

4) Are you post-whoring? Please don't.

FUCK SAKE!!

LOADS of intelligence unleashed in that post and you destroy it with carelessness

The Bluetones have only ever had ONE bass player, the man's also a noted illustrator with his own Wiki page and a passable chance of a q/o. Expect contact from the lawyers of Scott Morris any day soon.

I've got no problem with any new threads at all, providing they aren't duplicates - for example I think Gerry Adams had at least three at some point before I merged them all.   I suppose graphic porn, gore or absolutely anything by Zorders remains completely off limits,  but otherwise members should just do what they feel they have to do.

If the thread isn't popular it will fade into obscurity, possibly after Sir Creep has hurled some abuse at the OP, and if the thread is good it will provoke discussion, which is always a good thing.  I do have sympathy for everybody's different views on this, but it is impossible to please everyone and I happen to think the completely slack style of moderating here on Deathlist is one of the things that makes this forum a bit special.

Of course our resident music aficionado would waltz into this thread to correct an obscure band's line-up. Interesting to know anyway.

How about a rule that if a new thread doesn't get a minimum of x replies (that are on-topic) within y months, it gets deleted?

But to be fair, unless you're close to exceeding the website's bandwidth limit, I think there should be a leniency in terms of what is thread-worthy and what's not.

I've seen threads being started about someone who is dead already (or someone who is nearly dead, Tom Petty comes to mind). Please don't do that.
