I am old enough to have actually had one of the enamel golly badges that you got if you saved up enough jam labels. My mum was keener on them than I was. I hated golliwogs, they frightened me. It's important to note, though, that I never associated them with black people. They were fictional creatures like Noddy and Big Ears, not human beings.
