Joey Russ 7,242 Posted June 5, 2019 The first debate in the democratic primary is only a few weeks away, and there are very few potential candidates that could announce at this point, so I figured that now would be the time to start a poll for the primaries. Trump is obviously going to smash Bill Weld and anybody else who announces a challenge to Trump in the primary, but the democratic primary will be quite interesting with so many people in the race. Anyways, let’s start with a highlight of someone who isn’t likely to win.

Predictor 1,018 Posted June 6, 2019 2020 INAUGURATION SPEECH BERNIE SANDERS: "Dear Americans, I am honoured to have been elected to be your president of the United States. I promise to...*collapses to the floor*" Oh who am I kidding, he will probably become old enough to be invited to the 100th year anniversary memorial of Pearl Harbor. The man appears to have more energy than most people half his age. 1

RadGuy 1,614 Posted June 6, 2019 I voted for Joe Biden, because people are ignorant and will support him because ''he friend with Obama and me like Obama''. There tends to be a very loyalist and next-to-the-throne aspect to the Democratic nominations, hence Hillary's victory in 2016 or Al Gore's in 2000. But outsiders are still possible (think 2008 Obama - of course, hardly an outsider nowadays). As for who I support, I think I made it clear that I'm a Bernie bro. I will be canvassing for him throughout the primary season and hope to see him pull off the win. Only path to victory for him though, imho, is if Kamala Harris gains steam and chips away at some of Biden's support in the South - a region Bernie has no shot at anyway. It'll be an interesting year... 1
paddyfool 379 Posted June 7, 2019 I voted for Biden as most likely, but I hope he doesn't take it. Too old, too bland & middle of the road, too much of a chequered past with regards to his voting record, and the Dems also need someone higher energy to take down Trump. He is playing to the same white liberals inn Get Out that Obama did.
gcreptile 10,997 Posted June 9, 2019 I've seen small signs here and there that make a Warren victory very possible for me. Biden might play it too safe, and Sanders has a ceiling he has been unable to crack. Let Warren win Iowa and suddenly everything is possible. In hindsight, Hillary really should have picked her instead of plain boring Tim Kaine.

Joey Russ 7,242 Posted June 13, 2019 The DNC hasn’t announce the final lineup for the first debates yet, but it’s looks like everyone in the race apart from Steve Bullock, Mike Gravel (boo), Wayne Messam, and Seth Moulton qualified for the debate. Steve Bullock, however, is trying to contest that and if he successfully is able to contest that (which I doubt), then he might knock off one of the other no names candidates from the debates. EDIT: It has been announced that all but the four I mentioned above qualified for the debates.

paddyfool 379 Posted June 18, 2019 With the likelihood of the Dems running a geriatric challenger (Biden or Bernie) against the current geriatric and obese incumbent, what are the odds on a death in office during the next presidential term? None of the three look like popping their clogs soon, but there's a lot of evidence that it's a pretty stressful job to be trying to do 10 or 15 years post the usual retirement age.

Joey Russ 7,242 Posted June 27, 2019 Part one of the debates are over. Elizabeth Warren definitely had the best performance of the batch, whereas most of the rest were meh. The two biggest losers imo were Beto and Tim Ryan. Beto lost because he was clearly dodging the questions even for politicians, and Tim Ryan just sounded so bland and was amusingly destroyed by Tulsi on foreign policy. Though I wasn’t expecting much from the latter anyways...
Joey Russ 7,242 Posted June 27, 2019 After reading other analysis and thinking over my own thoughts on the debates, here’s a bit of deeper analysis on each of the ten contenders performances: Cory Booker in my view didn’t have any particular great moment that stood out to me, but he also didn’t do anything particularly negative in his performance either, apart from maybe trying to out Spanish Beto and Castro. Basically he tried to look like he’s out there for the average person, and I feel like the average viewer might think he’s actually out there for them. Those who’s been in politics for a while, however, knows that he’s a corporate democrat and those politically astute can catch when he’s using weasel words like how he tries to describe Medicare for all. Julian Castro for the most part was meh. However, he did have one of the highlights of the debate when he basically called out Beto for not supporting repealing section 1235 (more on Beto later), which definitely shown that Castro can show his courage on this particular issue. I may agree with Julian Castro on a lot of his policies, but you got to admit he had one of the better performances on stage and could be argued as a potential breakout star for this debate. Though none of the candidates were particularly amazing tbf. Bill de Blasio surprised me and put on a better performance than expected. He put himself as a fighting progressive and interjected to call on some of the other candidate’s bullshit, and while I personally don’t buy his progressive schtick, I could see people who might buy his stance cause he did seem a bit convincing. John Delaney seemed to be focused on bipartisanship and working on “real solutions, not impossible dreams”. Yeah, like that’s going to win you voters. His performance was awful, but not strikingly awful, if you know what I mean. I really liked what Tulsi Gabbard was saying for the most part, but unfortunately she didn’t give that strong of a debate performance, which really saddened me. Although I think everyone can agree that her takedown of Tim Ryan on the endless was absolutely amazing. In the future, she needs more moments like that in order to become a serious contender. Being super polite despite fighting for the right things isn’t really the way to go at this day and age. Jay Inslee didn’t do anything amazing, but he also didn’t do anything particularly bad. Kind of like Booker, except he seems a little bit more genuine than Booker. Amy Klobuchar gave a lot of middle of the road, milquetoast policies, and apart from one comment on abortion she was extremely bland the entire time. Oh, and saying that she won’t be the establishment candidate when she clearly will be establishment backed if she’s the nominee was definitely a massive lie. Oh Beto. Once one of the breakout stars for the 2018 elections, he did a horrible job at last nights debates. He clearly tried to have the charisma of Obama and it didn’t go well at all. He clearly dodged the questions even by politician standard, and he was shown as really a shell of a politician by people like Julian Castro and I think Bill de Blasio too (though maybe my memory is fucking with me on the latter). Basically, when you have to answer the question in Spanish to dodge a serious question, people know you phony, and tbh, he probably fucked up his senate chances in 2020 if he decides to run there instead of President too. Might be this year’s Scott Walker Tim Ryan was pretty forgettable for the most part. He tried to put on this working class vibe since he’s from Ohio, but the way he spoke was so bland that I’m not sure how people can buy him. His nail on the coffin was when Tulsi called him out for basically calling for endless war in the Middle East. Yeah dude, I think you might want to drop out before you get even more embarrassed. And finally, Elizabeth Warren. Her strong point was definitely with economics, and she definitely came out as a strong debater in this round. She didn’t really answer the question directly unless it was a direct question, but then most candidates didn’t really do that either. On the one hand, she didn’t really need to do that since she is definitely the front runner from that group. On the other hand, her dodginess on some of the questions makes me have some concern that she might not fight for a lot of the issues that people want if she becomes president. Nevertheless, from this group of ten, I’d say she was the strongest from this batch. So, if I had to give a top ten on debate performance on this stage, here’s how I think I would rate them 1. Elizabeth Warren 2. Bill de Blasio (the two who seem to have the most fighting spirit in them overall) 3. Julian Castro 4. Tulsi Gabbard (mostly meh for the next two but both had one really strong moment) 5. Jay Inslee (didn’t do anything great or wrong) 6. Cory Booker (like Inslee, but more politician like) 7. Amy Klobuchar (very milquetoast candidate that other candidates answered with better answers 8. John Delaney (didn’t have one particularly embarrassing moment, but campaigned on stuff that the democratic voters (and Republicans too!) no longer believe in, IE bipartisanship) 9. Beto O’Rourke (bad performance, slaughtered by other politicians who I don’t necessarily like, like Castro) 10. Tim Ryan (tried to put an act, but sounded so bland and milquetoast, and him being took down by Tulsi really screwed his chances, though his chances were nonexistent anyways) Anyways, if anyone else saw the debates I would like to hear your thoughts and see if any of you have any differences from my views, I love to have that discussion with you...
