11 pointsShannen (Annoyed Grunt)-erty Shannen Doherty, star of Beverly Hills 55, has died at the age of 90210. Best known for being president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, she was also the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967, and Prue Halliwell in Charmed from 1998 to 2001. She went on to be the longest-lived president in U.S. history, and the second longest-lived Heather in Heathers history. She survived her wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, whom she divorced in 2024. She was known as the "bad girl of the peanut industry". She was notable as one of the few card-carrying Republicans in Hollywood to be a presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, and one of the few dead people to never have actually died, and in fact still be alive today. It's been 9 years since she announced she had cancer, 8 years since she announced she had 5 years left to live, 4 years since she announced she had 10-15 years left to live, and 1 year since the cancer metastized to her brain – but 23 of you felt she had at least 1 more year left, including 5 of our heretofore-0-pointers: @The Immortal (+3 points), @ladyfiona (+3), @arghton (+9), @Spade_Cooley (+10) and @Great Uncle Bulgaria (+10). Congratulations to the remaining 0-pointers who did not pick Shannen Doherty, including the one who's never heard of Shannen Doherty outside this forum and has been putting off this obit for that reason. (How can "Beverly Hills 90210" be the name of a TV show? That's a spambot Twitter username.) Congratulations also to 1-pointer @Hell for uncharacteristically sneaking into the top 10 after two consecutive years in the bottom 10 – hope you don't get cold up here. Congratulations also to my mother, who smashes into the top 54 as @gcreptile (+9) and @msc (+17) land in the bottom three with new last-placer @GuyFromFuture (+17). 6 pointsA brief recap of hospitalised folks ( @arghton tell me if I miss someone): 1)Nritya Gopal Das (1938): certified immortal, failing health for the last 4 years, in ICU with UTI and other ailments; now stable and expected to make a full recovery. DISCHARGED. 2)Harvey Weinstein (1952): alleged failing health for the last few years, recently in ICU with double pneumonia, underwent emergency heart surgery and was reportedly critical; now out of danger and the whole situation was likely exaggerated. 3)Totò Schillaci (1964): suffering from metastatic colon cancer since early 2022, hospitalised in seemingly desperate condition; now reportedly improving as he was actually hospitalised for minor arrhythmia. 4)Pravin Gordhan (1949): SA politician, failing health for the last two years, hospitalised and wording is ominous, but it was ominous for most of the cases on this list. DEAD 5)Joe Wilson (1947): suffered minor stroke; stable and not in danger. DISCHARGED. 6)Mustafa Monwar (1935): hospitalised in ICU with advanced prostate cancer and other thousands of deadly diseases; now improving.... 7)Sitaram Yechury (1952): originally hospitalised for "routine check-up", has been critical and on life support for a while; seems to be resisting well.DEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD 8)Gary Shaw (1961): Aston villa footballer, in coma after fall; hopefully able to recover. DEAD 9)Rupert Keegan (1955): racing driver, hospice care with terminal cancer. 10)Eddie Miró (1935): Puerto Rico presenter, recently on life support; splendidly recovering apparently. 11)José Mujica (1935): president of Uruguay, esophageal cancer, CKD, vasculitis; on the mend and cancer free. DISCHARGED. 12)Hari Babu Kambhampati (1953): Mizoram governor, lung infection, but stable and recovering. Sam Nujoma, Jorge Lanata, Yuriko Mikasa all still in hospital.

3 pointsFrench-Italian showstar Caterina Valente has died in her Swiss home on September 9th. She was 93 years old. Her musical and artistic biography cannot be summed up in one or two sentences, as she was multi-talented and recorded songs in 11 languages. In 1955 she also had a top hit in the UK and USA with "The breeze and I", while in Germany she had several number 1 hits and million-sellers, in addition to her film career and TV shows. She was a real show star and will certainly be greatly mourned in Germany. https://www.focus.de/kultur/stars/sie-wurde-93-jahre-alt-caterina-valente-ist-tot_id_260303548.html

2 pointsPolitical endorsement has been around for hundreds of years, nothing to do with modern society. Dickens endorsed Lord Russell in the 1840s, to the point where he was offered a seat in parliament (he turned it down). He was also famous for pushing his fans to go get vaccinated. Going back centuries earlier, writers like Shakespeare and Chaucer were so popular in their time that Shakespeare was oft accused of stirring the mob against the elite, and Chaucer himself may have been murdered because his endorsements were too powerful an enemy for a pretender to the throne. Anyhow, Michael Caine has been trying to get me to vote Tory for over two decades now, to no success, but I still enjoy a lot of his films.

2 pointsAye, the same here really (and that's from someone with Trump on my DDP team this year). Eating pets etc. isn't as demented as drinking bleach to cure Covid. My picking him this year is simply a hunch that a fat 78-year-old guy that lacking in self-awareness and under that much pressure is a health emergency on a plate, and - fuck knows - he's aged visibly since he started with serious political campaigning. But I'm thinking he's taking the ADHD meds and gathers enough focus for the debates so doesn't appear near death. If Harris wins (47% nationally ahead in more tight swing states than Trump) I'm thinking a two-time loser, nearing 80 and facing serious legal cases rises rapidly on our collective radar from November.

2 pointsWhat seems beyond crazy is that the two bottom people that were least picked to survive are still alive! Jimmy Carter and Steve McMichael are both alive with almost 3/4th of the year gone.

2 pointsThis Field Cannot Be Left Frank Frank Field, the Birkenhead Social Justice Party MP for Birkenhead from 2019 to 2019 – also previously known for his brief 40-year stint as a Labour MP – has died of prostate cancer at the age of 81. A small-c conservative who was repeatedly courted for a potential defection by the big-C Conservatives – a party he was a member of in his youth – Field was considered a "maverick" and "independent thinker" in the Labour Party. He advocated for the return of national service, proposed further restrictions on immigration and abortion, denounced Jeremy Corbyn as a "force for anti-Semitism in British politics", featured on the Telegraph's list of the UK's "100 most influential Right-wingers", and was personal friends with Enoch Powell and Margaret Thatcher – all the usual signifiers of a Labour MP – but also, uncharacteristically for his party, campaigned against child poverty. Thankfully, he left before Starmer had to suspend him for these extreme left-wing beliefs. Despite being the 13th least picked candidate in the Inverse Dead Pool 2024, things were on the uptick for him – he was the 11th least picked in 2023, and the least picked outright in 2022, the year after he first checked into hospice care. I look forward to writing Jimmy Carter's obit in 2026. Former Inverse champions @Bibliogryphon and @YorkshireBanker are among the few who fielded Field as a candidate, but they only risked a respective 2 and 3 points on it. Someone whose chances have been levelled by playing Field, with 15 points, is @GuyFromFuture. Frankly, I'm beginning to think you aren't really from the future at all. Much like Frank when he went for his prostate exam 10 years ago, we have movement at the bottom. With my mum's team mainly being whoever she doesn't want to die, I have an outsize influence on her picks in the short descriptions I give of people she isn't really familiar with – "Frank Field, Labour MP" got 14 points, but if I'd described him as "Frank Field, hardline Brexiteer", it'd probably be 0. So, arguably, I'm responsible for her taking back last place. You're welcome, @diego. GAINED TOTAL = 1. TQR 0 = 1. Grimgrass 0 = 1. 1 pointI really do not think it matters much in timing when anyone would endorse a candidate. For myself knowing anyone else's choice holds no relevance or significance for me at all who I decide to vote for. I can decide on my own without having the so called elite of society try to tell me who to vote for.
-
1 pointShe endorsed because there was a deep fake circulating which showed her endorsing Trump. Her hand was forced with regards to timing

1 pointI work with deliveries, and I've had problems with customers who complained about knocking too hard on the gate, a customer, but this after knocking twice and no one answered, pressing the doorbell and nothing, then we insist and the customer gets angry with us still I'm not saying this is your case, I'm just telling you what happened to me. A client opened the door crying saying she woke up scared (she even called her husband), if she was sleeping how would she hear? Another threatened me, pretending that I had damaged the gate, and threatening to shoot me, he even went to the car and threatened to take something, the curious thing is that I had to knock more than once, as they didn't answer me. I say again, until today I don't know why they did this, because I didn't hit hard, I just hit in a way that they would hear

1 pointClorox Sr. was discharged from hospital 2 years ago today It would be wrong to say he's made a miraculous recovery. He's now 2 inches taller on his right side and is in constant pain. He almost certainly has PTSD and tried to self-medicate (hopefully it was a phase). Things got even worse after I made that post. I said goodbye to him, expecting never to see him again, about 5 times. You can't un-imagine that. I know I still have nightmares, and I wasn't the one who spent months being poked, prodded, cut open and drugged! It's frankly a miracle of modern medicine that he's not six feet under, even with his life expectancy shortened by 20 years. He returned to full-time WFH 6 months after the accident. Right now he's sunbathing and partying with my maw in Ayia Napa. Oh, and he started cycling again a few weeks ago. He loves cycling. It's as happy of an ending as we're going to get, really.

1 pointRoaming charges. Nonsense that I can leapfrog across European countries, video call my family, watch YouTube videos on trains, and be charged nothing. However I've barely switched my phone on in 2 days in Canada, and I've been charged £30. It means I have to get on WiFi and send messages home at silly times back in the UK. I can't fucking buy a plan either!! Buy a new SIM (for 10 days) or bust. I refuse to believe it's such an inconvenience for Giffgaff in comparison to when I'm roaming in the EU. Morocco and Spain are within spitting distance, yet in only one of those countries can your son ruin your life by playing some games on your iPad*. *Also by lying. But Michael Matheson's son is innocent! Down with absurd roaming charges!

1 pointGrave Pyres Celebrity chef Dave Myers has died of cancer at the age of 66. Best known as half of the "Hairy Bikers" – for Americans on the forum, that's basically the British version of Sons of Anarchy – along with Si King, he presented 37 different shows over 20 years; 34 of which had "Hairy" in the title, and 31 "Bikers". Non-fans of food/hair/cancer may also remember him for his lovably hapless run on series 11 of Strictly Come Dancing. Despite lasting several weeks in the contest, he remains Karen Hauer's worst-scoring partner, with an average score of 18.3 – narrowly followed by fellow celebrity chef Simon Rimmer on 18.5. Myers also has the honour of being the 1st member of the series 11 cast to die – narrowly followed by Tony Jacklin (2025, lymphoma), Sophie Ellis-Bextor (2026, murdered on the dancefloor), and Rachel Riley (2027, IDF friendly fire incident). It looks like 27 Inverse Dead Pool players saw him in those Knorr ads, thought "well, he's not dead there", and put him on their teams. One player who put too much stock in him is @maryportfuncity, who earns 23 points – the same total that Dave and Karen got for their highest-scoring Strictly dance, a waltz to 'Take It to the Limit' by the Eagles. Also taking it to the limit is @The Unknown Man, who gets 21 points – perhaps he didn't know which man he was picking? Things are also looking hairy for two 18-pointers: @BuffaloPhil (as seen dreading this update above), and my mother, whose tactic of allocating points on the basis of "aw, he seems nice" sees her back in the running for last place, with a total of 34 points. However, between this and Toby Keith, former 3rd-placer @diego is badly led astray by his apparent faith in celebrities being well enough to keep doing their jobs: 19 points on Myers takes him to a total of 36.
