msc 18,490 Posted February 2, 2021 tbh if Octopus started a thread about chefs hurt "while BBQing", I'd naturally assume it was just and reasonable thread based on the thread starter.

msc 18,490 Posted February 23, 2021 That just puts the exclamation mark on some frankly horrible health issues Gordon McQueen has been sadly dealing with a while. He had quite serious throat cancer a decade ago, and then a massive stroke which nearly killed him a few years ago. He's not going to be around for long, I'm afraid. harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy 1,696 Posted February 26, 2021 I don't understand why there isn't (or doesn't seem to be) more fuss about boxing and UFC, sports where the main objective is to rattle the other guy's brains around in his skull. I suppose there are a lot fewer famous boxers in the UK than footballers though?
gcreptile 10,987 Posted March 9, 2021 A possibility: Franz Beckenbauer. His lawyers said a week ago that he suffers from a progressive neurological disease with no expectation of improvement: https://apnews.com/article/international-soccer-world-cup-statutes-franz-beckenbauer-germany-bd01f9fea23cd41bbd73c5d154209880 Could be an exaggeration for legal purposes though. Those sports are in real trouble the second they're included because they'd be rendered underground/obsolete since you couldn't modify them without destroying them if you had to take brain damage into account. Football and rugby seem - just about - savable.

I suppose there are a lot fewer famous boxers in the UK than footballers though? It's not included in the same discussion, which I agree is odd, but it is talked about. Plenty of these former champions with lasting neurological conditions, most notably of course Ali, are clearly linked to their time in the ring. I believe the rationale behind removing the head guards in the amateur boxing at the Olympics was because wearing a helmet in some way increased the power of the impact or something. Grim Up North 3,727 Posted March 9, 2021 Football without heading is just about imaginable. Heading the ball could be illegal like handball is - the game would still work, just be different. i struggle to see where rugby goes from here.

msc 18,490 Posted March 31, 2021 @Octopus of Odstock A bit of Chinese whispers I've picked up from previously decent sources that I thought I'd see if you knew anything about. Apparently Terry Yorath (of Leeds, Spurs and Wales fame) was convalescing in 2019 at the Leeds Recovery Hub, which is currently for covid, but was at the time mostly specialising in dementia care. Excellent sleuthing! I seem to recall seeing something that he wasn't 100 per cent. And of course he is ex Leeds who seem to have 700 former legends Ill these days. Yeah, they seem to have done a Faustian pact to get back in the Premier League, even signed the great Bielsa-bub as their manager. Mick Bates is likely the next of Revie's boys to go - the talk on Leeds fan forums is months to live.

A few weeks ago, while doing his normal link from a game he was covering, he sounded bloody awful, his speech was slurred like he was drunk. I actually thought that he would get pulled off air, so bad he sounded. Subsequent weeks have seen him his normal self, if not ever so slightly subdued. Maybe there is a clue in there somewhere? Octopus of Odstock 2,206 Posted April 4, 2021 Not sure if anyone saw the Jack Charlton documentary but it was absorbing viewing - both happy and sad. Especially when you saw him with Maurice Setters who also died in 2020 with both suffering from dementia. Anyway, Frank Wignall, ex England international also has dementia although if he's given an interview, he must be in early stages. https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/football-news/broken-legs-pay-rises-managing-5260209.amp?__twitter_impression=true
