You scooped it Dawn, and that's against some very stiff opposition, from Utah particularly.

Lots of sh*t to choose from, but only one of them involves bagpipes...

Happy with that top 3....top off with Suzi Q or any Slade classic and that will do, thank you very much.

72/73 were really not good music years. And again I think "Oh, if I had started with the 80s, so many good #1 songs... Feels like I'm in love, There's no one quite like grandma, Ebony and Ivory, Save your love ..." :D

But anyway, here we are a decade earlier:

Unsure if the "vote once a day" counts when your last vote got retconned!

But anyhow, as with last time, the songs which made the top 10 but didn't get to number one in 1972 and 1973 include:

Spoiler

1972
Al Green - Let's Stay Together
Alice Cooper - Elected
America - A Horse with No Name
Bee Gees - Run to Me
Cher - Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves
David Bowie - Starman
Derek and the Dominos - Layla
Don McLean - American Pie
Elton John - Crocodile Rock
Elton John - Rocket Man
ELO - 10538 Overture
Elvis - American Trilogy
Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally)
Hawkwind - Silver Machine
Jackie Wilson - I Get the Sweetest Feeling
John Lennon - Happy Xmas
Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
Mott the Hoople - All The Young Dudes
T. Rex - Children of the Revolution
Chiffons - Sweet Talking Guy

1973
Alice Cooper - No More Mr Nice Guy
Boris Pickett - Monster Mash
Carly Simon - You're So Vain
Bowie - Jean Genie
Bowie - Life on Mars
Elton John - Daniel
Elton John - Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Elvis - Always on my Mind
Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
Macca and Wings - Live and Let Die
Roberta Flack - Killing me Softly
Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle with You
T Rex - 20th Century Boy
Thin Lizzy - Whisky in the Jar

I'd bat for all of them over nearly 70% at least of the ones that actually made it to number one!

And yet, your hatred for Slade overcomes such bounteous competition? You really prefer Dawn, Little Jimmy and oh I don't know....Peters and Lee....to anything by Slade?

Remarkable consistency anyway, kudos on that.

Alas, not on YouTube, but there is a Muppet Show episode where they hold auditions for new acts. A running gag is a girl and her frog perform songs badly and are taken off the stage in seconds. One of these songs is Yellow Ribbon.

None too different from this game here!

No, not necessarily prefer, but even I only have 6 points to subtract. These go to songs (and certainly artists) that I personally don't like - just like everyone here gives their points for exactly that reason.

Yes, the Peters & Lee song is awful, but it's not the only awful song in the competition. And eventually people even liked the song, it ended up being #1 (if only for a week, but still). It'll surely get killed quick, just like the awful Osmond songs.

You forgot Blue is The Colour!

I was just looking at the 1972 list and saw Desiderata, a 'song' so awful I'd blocked it from memory; in fact it's so awful I don't know how it never reached number 1.

Ah well you see I'd refer to that as an example of Toast's tactical voting. Except in this case - right out of the gate. :P

Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy old dough - WTF

In amongst all those puke making slushy 'love' songs? This was a breath of (mouldy old) fresh air. Brilliant stuff it was

I remember my bf's younger brother bought it and was widely ridiculed.

While we were listening to the likes of Yes, ELP, Deep Purple and Pink Floyd.  Pretentious twats that we were.

I've mellowed since then though :D

Oh I was the same as a teen, but this was before that, I was still a child at the time. It's before Dark Side of the Moon even.

And I mentioned somewhere pages back that it's unsurprising the likes of us got into prog rock, pretentious as it was, when the charting alternative was the drivel we see here :D

The Sweet - Blockbuster - Song not on Spotify but found on Youtube. Love it.

Excellent song. The lead singer, Brian Connolly, was adopted half-brother of Glasgow legend Mark McManus (ie Jim Taggart). Both men died of alcoholism in the 90s. Never met Connolly but McManus was a lovely man.
