Kill or Save: UK No.1-hits of the 90s

Me neither, and to be honest I’m struggling to understand it’s popularity. Back in ‘97 I suppose it could have been all the geriatrics reminiscing about Al Bowlly and/or some sort of backlash against Tori Amos, but now?

The British love an underdog.

I don't dislike it but I would have expected it to have more of an impact if it truly is the best No.1 single of the 90s

Vogue is too 80s to win a 90s game.

Still wish I hadn't. It's fine, but it's not the greatest #1 single of the 1990s by a long chalk.

I was tempted to give No Doubt a leg-up, as it's the other one of the four I like, but we've just seen how quickly a healthy score can vanish.

Not yet, he's still alive and lustily singing 'always look on the bright side of life'.

Because I don't care for that either.

Curious then that we haven't voted whatever is to that exalted position.

You'd think we've a varied enough age range and perhaps even a large enough number to cause some kind of reversion to the mean and vote something that's commonly top of some list.

Pretty sure you're bang on - Your Woman wouldn't be topping any such list.

Strange.

I love Don’t Speak. Vogue is good too. I just want the winner to be a left-field, unmistakably 90s sound.

Personally, I'd say if that's what you're looking for, the more popular choice would be Praise You. Very 90s but more mainstream than Your woman. Looks like it's Madonna or White Town though.

It had a reasonable amount of airplay in the States, I believe I read it was #23 on Billboard.

I think it’s the throwback style, ie it’s uniqueness, reminiscent of the 1920-30s that caught listener’s ears; same as Taco (One Night in Bangkok, but to a much greater extent).  The scratchy bit gives the old phonograph feel.  Not that it should have catapulted to #1 but may help explain some popularity.

And that there clinches it for Your Woman.

Well, that and the simple fact that I prefer it. I think it’s great.

As someone who's on the younger side of this chat, I've noticed a lot of my cool friends listening to Your Woman recently. I think the fluidity of sexuality and gender present in the song helps to fuel its resurgence. Also it just sounds cool.

But popularity surely plays a part? I'm fully agreed that the Great British Public have questionable taste in both their music artists and their politicians but if it's a great music song (among the greatest of the decade no less), I would think it would be more well known. I'm not sure it's even a cult classic rediscovered years later. Or maybe I'm just too old and mainstream. :old:
