Commtech Sio Bibble 2,083 Posted July 28, 2023 The Dictionary Deadpool Each participant must pick a 10 letter word reasonably valid in the Oxford English Dictionary and then for each letter of the word choose a ‘celebrity’ who’s first or last name matches with the corresponding letter (similar to the ABC deadpool). If your chosen word includes the same letter more than once, please choose different ‘celebrities' for each. Example - Strawberry Simon Cowell Terry Gilliam Ryan Reynolds Alan Alda William Shatner Barlow, Thelma Ewards, Huw Roberts, Eric Roberts, Julia Yuri Oganessian Scoring - Each death will be scored based on the value of the letter in the English language Scrabble so in the example above Thelma Barlow would be worth 3 points as B is worth 3 in Scrabble. There's no difference in points whether first or last name is used, however Alliterative Names, such as Alan Alda, will score double points. Unique picks are worth an extra point. Unique & Alliterative picks are worth triple points. General Rules - Entries close at midday (BST) August 4th and must be sent by private message. Usual deadpooling rules apply (have to be reasonably famous, no death row picks etc…). Make sure to clarify who you’ve chosen if necessary or else the first google result will be used. No need to pick subs, if one of your picks dies in the next week I'll PM you to ask for a replacement. I’m not particularly fussed about obituaries just as long as there’s enough proof to say they’re dead (a wikipedia edit won’t cut it but a reputable tweet might). The game will last until either someone has all ten of their picks die or until one year after starting (August 4th 2024). This is my first time creating a deadpool so if anything is unclear or you have any questions feel free to ask!

time 8,655 Posted July 28, 2023 Oh goody, another overly-complicated deadpool for me to enter then forget I've entered! Anyway, a question for you @Commtech Sio Bibble - on the subject of bonus poins for alliterative names. Taking as an example the late Dambuster Squadron Leader Johnson. He was known (as were a a lot of other Johnsons), as Johnny, though his given name was George. So bonus or not? There are a few other cases where this might come into play, including one of my prospective picks.

If they're commonly known by a nickname or anything other than they're birth name, it's perfectly acceptable to use that. For the example you gave his Wikipedia article is titled Johnny Johnson not George Johnson so I'd accept the nickname as his name. If you have any doubts about specific people you'd want to use that you're unsure on, just PM me the name and I'll take a look. As long as your'e not taking the mick, I'll probably allow it.

My specific concern was name number 7, but I've never heard him referred to as anything other than the alliterative first name stated.

Commtech Sio Bibble 2,083 Posted July 31, 2023 Hello folks, I've currently got 15 entries and one word shared between two teams, so I thought I'd put it to the participants on whether I should allow the same word for multiple teams, disqualify the word all together or ask the more recent of the two entrees to change their word. Well, I'd say there's no rule against the same word. As long as it's not also a duplication of a team, I don't see the issue. Maybe a consideration for future games?

I think it’d be better if everyone had a different word. Acts as one’s team name dunnit.

As it wasn't originally specified what would happen in the event of duplicated words, I'd say allow it this occasion, but amend the rules to forbid future duplicates, the original entrant to keep their entry, the duplicate to change, applicable from now. There, it is said, approximately 35,000 ten-letter words in the English language.
TQR 14,426 Posted July 31, 2023 It wouldn’t be too much of a spoiler to just list the words in play (without saying who picked what) to avoid duplicate entries, would it?

It is of course possible to have different words and still duplicate a team (though, granted, the chances are somewhat remote).
