Hello, and welcome to the seventh, yep, SEVENTH edition of Deathlist’s main (often sole) reason to visit the forums, Kill or Save! 

 

We’re combing through the UK music charts, from the 60s right through to the 00s (though esteemed host @wannamaker will probably have to see that game out for the rest of my life, at this rate) and we’ve made a start on the ones that missed out on the top spot by a gnat’s cock. In a thrilling five-way finale, Queen’s soaring gospel-inspired rock classic Somebody To Love was the worthy winner of the award that I’m sure dwarfs the likes of BRITs, Grammys etc: Deathlist Dot Net’s Best UK No.2 of the 1970s.

 

Keep your Moet & Chandon in your pretty cabinet, though (yes, I know, wrong song), because it’s straight back to work for us. Now it’s time to whittle 176 tunes down to 1, and decide the best chart runner-up of the 1980s. The 60s and 70s are met with zoomers sticking their fingers in their ears, the 90s and 00s see the boomers gnashing what’s left of their teeth, but the 80s should be everyone’s happy place. Right? Right?!?

- Each song starts with 20 points (whether it deserves it or not).

- You can only vote once a day. To avoid any time zone confusion, please put a date at the top of your scoring post (e.g. “Sat 1 Jul”, “01-07-2023”, whatever, as long as it’s clear and doesn’t just say “today” or some shit.)

- Once a day, you can award 4 points to and subtract 6 from the songs of your choosing in the current round. You can split your daily +4 and -6 between as many songs as you like, it’s down to you.

- Make sure you copy and paste the most recent voter’s scoreboard when you take your turn to score. For your own ease, ‘paste as plain text’ to get rid of the previous poster’s formatting.

- Just to make it clear for everyone, please mark your scores after the song title and adjust the song’s points total as you go. Ideally make your scores bold too. As an example:

As ever, we will start with 5 group stages, beginning with the No.2 hits of 1980/81, followed by a grand final consisting of the 25 songs that have qualified, where we will ultimately decide what the undisputed best No.2 single of the 1980s is, and the artist(s) of said song can FINALLY say their career has peaked. There are a few more songs overall than in the 70s game, but once again each round here is not wildly different in size (all making up more than one sixth but less than one quarter of the total no. of songs), so for ease I’ll keep it at 5 qualifying songs per round.

 

1980/81: 30 songs

1982/83: 38 songs

1984/85: 30 songs

1986/87: 33 songs

1988/89: 37 songs

 

I’ll keep up the tradition of finding each round’s most prolific killer (it’s not strictly the aim of the game, but hey, it brings joy to some), but this time assists (the one to knock each song into elimination distance) will also be counted.

Tbh it kind of checks out; the 70s game had fairly small, manageable rounds with songs where the gulf between the good songs and bad was a vast, yawning chasm; the 00s charts were fucking freakishly dynamic. There were 144 songs in the 70s game compared to 273 (!!!) in the 00s.
