Jack Parnell

The jazz drummer, TV theme-tune writer and bandleader, who was musical director for "The Muppet Show" has died aged 87.

Today's fact from Wikipedia: Parnell's son Ric, also a drummer, played the part of Mick Shrimpton in "This is Spinal Tap". Shrimpton was one of the numerous former "Tap" drummers who met various untimely deaths, in his case an on-stage explosion during their Japanese tour.

Ah, good lad! That should put me back in the top ten. All I need now is for Hakimullah Mehsud to get blown up and I'll be laughing.

I'm curious to know TMIB - would that BBC/Wiki mash up thing have been enough to get me DDP points? The existence of that page is why I decided to pick him (and Steve New) in the first place.

If it's a direct flinch from Wikipedia, then I would say no, as Wikipedia is not sufficient I feel for an obit...

Noticed yesterday when I Googled James Brown's old tub thumper Clyde Stubblefield that there was no update on his Wiki page since last year when he was awaiting kidney transplant surgery and hoping his friends could raise some money to help with medical bills. None of this looks good for him long term. Tragic when you think he's probably the most sampled musician in history, and gets nothing in return.

Looks like it's time to give the drummer some:

Stubblefield, 67, who has overcome bladder cancer and is diabetic, now

requires lifetime kidney dialysis treatment. He remains optimistic as

deals with his new situation, determined to work steadily. "I just

want to be happy," he says.

"Give The Drummer Some!" is a donation campaign created by The

Coalition for Clyde Stubblefield for the purpose of helping

Stubblefield find financial relief through this process. A website at

chipin.com, a service tailored expressly for this purpose, has been

established to collect donations which are funneled directly to him

safely and securely through PayPal.

On the webpage, prospective donators can click on a widget and send

the donation amount of their choice. Participants are also encouraged

to join The Coalition by spreading the word and embedding the widget

on their own websites and social media pages. There are simple

instructions on Stubblefield's chipin page for making that work

instantly.

We're blessed with heavy-hitters onboard from every direction of the

music industry. They are our greatest asset for getting people's

attention and spreading the word of our effort, explains Stanoch, "We

want Clyde to have the opportunity to feel the soulfulness of everyone

whose life he has touched as we come together on his behalf.

Very sad loss, had a nice email from Robert Lee Balderrama (guitarist for ? and The Mysterians) thanking me for requesting a couple of tracks on the local radio stations here in Minneapolis. There will be another track or two played on KFAI (www.kfai.org) between 2pm & 4pm CST today

Ray Smith, long time mate of Charley Watts. Decent drummer in his own right.
