Holiday Thread

Recommended Posts

G'Day British forumers.

I'm coming to England in early Feb next year for about three weeks, it is not so much a holiday as it is a vacation. Although I have business in London I should have a few free days to explore your wonderful city, having never been to London, before traveling to Devon for 2 weeks.

The people I'm staying with in London have asked me to compile a list of sights to visit while I'm there, so if there are any Londoners in the forum who could recommend places off the tourist track, preferably pubs and/or taverns, it would be much appreciated.

If you're after the true home-from-home experience, then the notorious Redback could be the place for you. Although it's a mere hop, skip and a barf away from me, I've never ventured in and, short of being frogmarched there at gunpoint, I doubt I ever will.

A world where the Bruces are Bruces, and the Sheilas are too.

Cheers to those who replied to my posting and to those who replied directly to my control thingy. I will surely do everything in my power to visit those places you have recommended within my limited time frame.

Just another quick question - does anyone know if the Jack the Ripper tour still runs? I wrote an essay on him years ago and became fascinated with the whole saga, I would love to be able to take the tour.

Entering " London + "jack the ripper tours" " in Google etc yields many links to tours. I hope this helps.

Well, first post today I think should be in this thread, since I've been away for a week in Cornwall - guess no one's missed me - hope you all are well as I catch up on the board.

Hoping to get to New Zealand then Los Angeles this winter for a few weeks. In the process of finding low prices. Lowest so far is £3,500+. FFS I'll have to sell body parts to get that.

I was under the impression that BA and a few other airlines do a "round the world" ticket. Costing about £2,500. You can make between 6 and 10 flights. Is that what you have been looking at, that's now £3,500+?

HCW what about? http://www.statravel.co.uk and I don't think you need be either still under 26 or a student to travel with them.

Route 2

This trip really packs it all in - you could be spotting the big 5 in South Africa one month and seeing how the A-list live in Hollywood the next. On the way you'll explore the sights of Sydney and the stunning scenery of New Zealand. This ticket allows up to 4 stops including selected destinations in Asia, Africa, Australia, the USA and Fiji.

UK - Johannesburg - Perth - overland - Sydney - Christchurch - overland - Auckland - Los Angeles – UK

Exclusive, not available through any other agent!

From £969 (inc. all pre-paid taxes)

Route 6

This is a simple route with stop offs in popular round the world destinations. Ask one of our specialist consultants about personalising your route.

UK - Bangkok - overland - Singapore - Darwin - overland - Sydney - Auckland - San Francisco - overland - New York - UK

Exclusive, not available through any other agent!

From £699 (inc. all pre-paid taxes)

They do a fair - London > Auckland return, valid everyone till 30/11/10 is £905 + vat

then do another - London > LA return, typical £756.80 inclusive.

but that's a lot of traveling! - I say do one this year, and one some time in the future.

I think Air New Zealand do a routing westbound downunder via LAX. Assuming you are looking at economy and that is per ticket then it seems very steep to me! These are some suggestions I don't know if they are of help.

  1. If you are looking to go over Xmas try going a week or so earlier or...
  2. Fly on Xmas day/new years eve as these are less popular, and after all are only arbitrary dates!
  3. The cheap fares may not have been released yet.
  4. Perhaps book seperate return flights UK to LA then LA to NZ.
  5. If you do go for a round the world ticket do a stopover in SE Asia to make the most of your stay!

It all sounds exciting! As you know I love travel... Hope you find a reasonable fare.

I could always throw an extra prawn or two on the BBQ on Xmas day, HCW.

Feel free to drop in on your stopover.

Ah, a stopover on New Zealand's West Island might not be such a bad idea either. Good call honez!

I think the Tasmanians call it "the North Isle". Could look at Korean Air via Seoul, modern planes and good service

Thanks for all the advice folks, and the invitation honez. I might take you up on your offer. I think my stepson is looking to book us our flights as he says he can get them for about £2,500+.

I have a horrible feeling if I let him do it, I'll end up in Alaska.

Well, I guess if I read things it would go a long way toward comprehension and reasonable posting. Suppose?

I don't even have the excuse that it was late/early. *sigh*

OK - I don't recommend winding up in Alaska in January. Really. For sure. It's very dark, very cold, and you could trip over Sarah Palin without knowing it and have to be disinfected.

I heard that Sarah Palin had had a boob job but I didn't think they were big enough to trip over.

Nah, but you could trip over her ego 50 miles out and do yourself some damage.

T.P. McKenna? George Shearing? Alfred Burke? Please define your terms of reference!

I've got 1753 names on my spreadsheet and none of these three were in the frame. In fact because I've been out of the loop and glossed over the threads I can't even tell you for what they were famous for. All three to me sound like literature types and that's not an interest of mine. Now if you look at the names closest to where I may have put them on my sheet (Martin McGinnuess, Charlie Sheen and Delta Burke) I could say that it would have been a top week.

So it's obvious then...amongst your many talents RA, you clearly are a celebrity Grim Reaper. Major figures skirting death's deep mystery prosper as you ski. If you could see your way to offing, say, Alencar, Elvis Gordon, Diana Wynn Jones or one other from DDT's DDP list sometime before the end of March he could cruise to a Deathrace points total above 2011, and sort the year's first dead pool win.

Off to the United States of America on Tuesday for a week.

Providence RI with just a short day trip to New York City.

So what does the panel think: Brimley or Banshees?

I've just spent a lovely few days with my in-laws in Looe. Splendid weather. Richard Madeley walked past me while I was stood outside Somerfields (or Co-op or whatever it's called), he was on his own, looked rather hassled with windswept hair, a rucksack, a casual white shirt and denim jeans. Judy was nowhere to be seen (however my thick daughter did say 'Is Judy Finnegan Michael Finnegan's sister?) - then the next day I saw Dick Strawbridge in Asda in St Austell. I'm afraid I have no photographic evidence of my A list celebrity encounters, you'll just have to trust me. Dick looks younger in real life, and his wife is quite short. (I assume it was his wife. It possibly could have been sister/daughter/mistress/hairdresser.)

Somerfields you say? Are you sure Judy wasn't checking out the multibuy deals on the White Lightning?
