Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted January 3, 2017 More claims that she is on the mend: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/01/heavy-cold-forces-queen-miss-new-years-day-church-service-sandringham/ and yet there is still no sign of her. This is how they used to deal with the death of Soviet leaders, but maybe I'm getting a tiny bit ahead of myself...Her health is now one of the lead items on the nightly news down here, so it is becoming a major issue. No it isn't. Davey's views are coloured by the seemingly slightly more hysterical Australian media. Royal things which cause barely a yawn here are seemingly the sign of abdication, death, or republicanism down there. It's a bit mad. The pollies down here love a handy distraction, they do this kind of thing all the time; the royals have always been a soft target.Yep.

Deathray 2,940 Posted January 3, 2017 At the risk of coming off a bit conspiracy nutter. Whilst there is clearly a bit of paranoia, rumour and general utter idiocy flying around on the topic, is it really out of order to be a little bit worried that monarch hasn't been seen in public for coming up to a month? A heavy cold could just mean a heavy cold or a heavy cold could be the royal code for she's fucking dying lads, start putting in the security arrangements for her funeral, it's terminal brain cancer or maybe it could mean she's not going anywhere but she's developing alzhiemers and we cannot really have her waltzing into public as some sort tourist attraction anymore, sorry fellas or it could be royal code for with the Queen being 90 she decided to stop giving a fuck about royal duty, renounced god, taking up watching a lot of lesbian porn and started to arranging swingers nights in Buck's pal whilst dressing as if she was Kim Kardashian and we can't have her image tarred by this whole episode or it could be royal code for her and Philip are binge-watching the Crown but as she enjoys pointing out every single mistake in these sorts of programmes it's going to take rather a long time to get through it.
msc 18,438 Posted January 3, 2017 Or it could just be that a bunch of us have had this heavy cold that's going around and know how hideous it is, and none of us are anywhere near 90. (Well, I assume Toast isn't...) It takes around 3 weeks to recover from it, if the Queen caught it just before Christmas when her schedule started to change, she'll be under the weather for about another week. I doubt its worse than that, given she was able to film her Christmas speech not long before.

I prefer to think of her sitting up in bed, corgis around her, hot tea, tissues and chocolate digestives on the night table beside her and her binge watching Keeping Up Appearances and laughing and coughing her ass off.

How well someone looked four weeks ago is a rubbish barometer of their current health.

Toast 16,131 Posted January 3, 2017 the past fortnight has served as a wake-up call to her family that they can no longer take her health — or that of the Duke of Edinburgh — for granted. What the fuck makes these reptiles think that the family needed a "wake-up call"? I'm quite sure they, like any other family, are aware that family members who are 90+ may not be as robust as once they were. Anyway, what was this "third outing" HM skipped? What have I missed? For her to miss two in a row is almost unheard of, but missing a third outing, as she did yesterday, is virtually unprecedented.
WednesdayAddams 103 Posted January 3, 2017 I've been known to swallow the odd conspiracy hook line and sinker, I admit, so this comes with a caveat... I think the people surrounding the Queen have been trying to prepare the nation in subtle ways for some time. How many times are we told the Queen is stepping back from this that and the other? Compare/contrast to Phil the Greek, a full 5 years older, who has just been revealed as the 'hardest working' Royal of the lot we are told. No sign of him stepping back from anything that I know of. Evidence is the thing I tend to grope for at times like this (when I think I've drifted from the flock)... A few weeks back it was announced that the Queen was stepping down as Patron of 25 charities. That was a nonsense token gesture. She remains patron of 550 odd others, so what's that all about? We were told that both her and Phil have had the same 'cold' yet Phil rocks up for Church Christmas morning with a lot more gusto than I could have managed at half the age. Bare in mind, the pair of them must have had identical support and medical care. I agree and accept this cold bug has been flipping nasty as I know people who have had it, however, I think she's been ailing with something even before that so this cold on top would be highly serious. I am fully expecting Phil to outlast her. All the above may just be BS, only time tells I guess.

It's actually worth comparing this year's address to last year's. The difference is striking. This year she could barely muster the strength to smile at the end. We can assume that was recorded a few weeks before Christmas itself. They normally do it around mid November I believe. I also noted the picture on her desk this year compared to the whole array of family snaps the previous year. She's ailing, I'm convinced.
