Thimbleby represented Hawke's Bay at provincial level and was a member of the New Zealand national team, the All Blacks, on their 1970 tour of South Africa. For what it’s worth, it’s believed the origin of the word football referred to any ball sport played on foot, as opposed to horseback. He is also known for his television promotional work with Lowes Menswear.
