6 marks.  Well done!

2.5 marks.  Still not bad, since as I said, I reckon these were tricky

The correct answers:

  Hide contents

1. 394 AD (they ran for over a thousand years, until they were banned by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I for being pagan)

2. 1896 (in Athens, Greece)

3. 1920

4. 6.03 metres, so 6 metres

5. Decathlon and Heptathlon

6. 1984

7. Monaco

8. Alcohol

9. I'll accept any two from Climbing, Skateboarding, Surfing, Karate, 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX, Madison cycling, Baseball, and Softball (although the last two events were previously seen in 2008 and some previous years)

10. Beijing

I was sort of within 100 years on the first one. I just accidentally put the wrong two letters on the first one, honest. :D

I might take out question 5, since I'm not sure it's all that recognised as a title.

What if I asked instead for people to name at least 4 of the events in the Pentathlon? (Half a mark if at least two correct)

Further round: Mountains and rivers

Apologies if there's a slight British bias to the questions

Mountains and rivers

1)      Which French Mountaineer led the first expedition to reach a summit higher than 8000m?

2)      What is the highest mountain in Europe?

3)      When was the great eruption of Krakatoa?

4)      How high is the summit of Ben Nevis?

5)      On what mountain is the world’s CO2 concentration measured?

6)      The Nile is the world’s longest river.  How many countries does it pass through?

7)      What river is the world’s second longest?

8)      Which is the tallest waterfall in the world?

9)      Which British river in 2018 had the worst recorded microplastics pollution in the world?

10)   How many miles long is the river Thames?

Well I don't expect your family to forget the most famous fucking river in the entire world. But yeah, some of those are "taking on The Beast for £100k on The Chase" level.

Spoiler

Although, for the record, I'm quite impressed with how close I got Krakatoa and the Thames in miles just from the top of my head. I clearly haven't seen Ghost Light recently enough, as it is set the year *after* the Krakatoa explosion, hence sending folk to Java as a euphemism for death. :D

Was roped in to setting a round for the missus' old uni pals Zoom quiz, was given the topic "garlic". Thought I'd share these with the class.

  1. Which popular garlic-based side dish is known in Germany as “knoblauchbrot”?
  2. In which famous mafia film does imprisoned mob boss Paulie have a “wonderful system for doing the garlic”?
  3. Two-thirds of the world’s garlic production takes place in which country?
  4. “Garlic” is so-called as a mix of the old English words “gar”, meaning spear, and “lic”, meaning what common vegetable?
  5. In 2002, Jessica Garlick finished third in the Eurovision Song Contest, the UK’s best performance since “Love Shine A Light”. What was the name of her song?
  6. What is the Middle Eastern dip created by strained salted yogurt mixed with cucumbers, salt, olive oil and garlic?
  7. Garlic is the favoured food of which video game character, usually depicted as a villain in the Super Mario games?
  8. The so-called “Garlic Belt” is a term for four European nations also known by the acronym “PIGS”. Which four nations are they?
  9. In which Shakespearean play does the character Bottom say “And most dear actors, eat no onions nor garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath”?
  10. Garlic, along with cucumbers and onions, are the only vegetables not eaten by which vegetarian cartoon character?

Not so much a quiz as my faceblindness absolutely pissing me off. How many celebs from this ITV Telethon 1992 ending can you recognise? I've got:

Gary Wilmott

Sheila Ferguson

Lesley Joseph

Tosh Lines

Lord Sutch

Cynthia Payne

Gorden Kaye

Nick Cotton
Cheryl Baker

Michael Aspel

Gloria Hunniford

I also think it's the classic Chippendales lineup and forgotten TV magician Andrew O'Connor on stage as well? Who else? I'm missing some really obvious ones.

Roy Castle

John Altman ( Nick Cotton)

That 'Recall' guy off Londons Burning

Matthew Kelly

Judith Chalmers

That disabled presenter actor who may be called Rik something

….and dear old Jimmy Savile.

Andrew O'Connor became fairly successful behind the Camera, creating Game Shows and writing TV things.
