Banshees Scream 110 Posted September 20, 2013 Four-page spread in The Wire and a 2-hour tribute on Strange Fruit coming soon? Strange fruit? Did you like her music?
maryportfuncity 10,645 Posted September 22, 2013 Bloody hell, why haven't we got an avant-prog/free improvisation/contemporary classical thread?! I blame the disappearance of Anubis, but surely Maryport could've started one instead? Anyway, the world won't have to suffer anymore squawking/honking/droning from Henry Cow/Comus etc member and composer Lindsay Cooper, who's died of MS (so I guess she hadn't been skronking for a while). Four-page spread in The Wire and a 2-hour tribute on Strange Fruit coming soon? Fair point, but maybe it'd be fitting if the thread was randomly spread around here in a way that allowed only those truly tuned in to appreciate the pattern. Cheers for the heads up Harry; I suggest at least two pints duration of banter next weekend is devoted to selecting the precise running order of Henry Cow tracks for a two hour bovine blast of Strange Fruit. I'll start making my list now.
Book 3,556 Posted September 23, 2013 (edited) Legendary jazz pianist Paul Kuhn has died at age 85. In the 1960s he had some success with German schlager songs like "Der Mann am Klavier" and "Es gibt kein Bier auf Hawaii" (1963 No.5 in the German charts). Later on he was a highly esteemed jazz musician. Sorry, the link is in German, didn't find an English one: http://www.spiegel.d...n-a-923898.html English: http://en.haberler.c...awaii-s-306016/ Edited September 24, 2013 by Book

TAFKAG 70 Posted November 26, 2013 It's Chico's time. Jazz drummer and bandleader Chico Hamilton dies aged 92. His brother was Capt Dobie in Starsky & Hutch. And here's Chico and the chaps in the great Sweet Smell of Success.
TAFKAG 70 Posted December 6, 2013 Godot, as a means of checking the possibilities of enticing George to join us do you think we should start a thread on his site dedicated to the long term survival of the ageing jazzers of the UK. Humphrey Lyttleton, Stan Tracey, George and the rest? Just askin' like. UK jazzer Stan Tracey is ageing no longer.

Scraggy Taters 290 Posted December 10, 2013 There is a legend of New Orleans .. how famous is his name? I believe he still performs. If it's a jazz musician, it'll be performing 'oral sax'.

msc 18,439 Posted March 13, 2014 Yet again disinvested and missed the hit. RIP Dave Brubeck - really lovely chap - shame these wonderfull people have to leave us. Iola, Brubeck's wife of 70 years, has died. Unsurprising as they seemed quite besotted with each other in the recent documentary.

Garn2 34 Posted April 17, 2014 Composer and sexophonist Fred Ho has died at 56 http://www.nytimes.c...-dies.html?_r=1 Minority jazz musician and left-wing social activist, I thought, equalled textbook Guardian coverage. But that's looking pretty unlikely now.
Dr. Zorders 1,271 Posted April 17, 2014 What is the world coming to? Actually it's only been four days, you never know this might be one that gets mentioned but not in his own article. Does the Guardian do a sort of "people who died this week" type thing?
