Boudicca 702 Posted April 4, 2011 That is close enough DDT! It's the avatar created by Captain Oates for celebrations and described by Banshees as a Beauty Makeover. Thank you
Tuber Mirum 125 Posted April 4, 2011 I reckon Captain Oates is very likely still to have them. I'll drop him a line.
Boudicca 702 Posted April 4, 2011 Thanks NAP. If he does then he is a demon backer-upper. And not fond of maple syrup pancakes around computers. Nice to see you again by the way
Captain Oates 21 Posted April 5, 2011 Long shot but can anyone help me find my avatar? I was drunkenly messing around with sign generators and my personal picture at the weekend and replaced it by mistake without saving the old one.I thought I had a copy on Face-book, but no.And I lost all the lovely photo-shopped seasonal variations kindly produced by Hein and Captain Oates in the Great Pancake and Maple Syrup / laptop incident of 2011.My husband found the picture in 2005 before Google Images even existed! It doesn't help that James Cameron, the bastard, released a film entitled "Avatar"That's if anyone can even remember what it looked like. I'm not too sure myself I have a folder of things related to your avatar (80mb) which might yield something - if I can find a way to send it to you. Mostly experimental an boring but perhaps worth a rummage.

Lard Bazaar 3,799 Posted April 5, 2011 Right, I have a wireless router thing attached to the main PC in my bedroom, and off that I connect my wireless lap top to the internet, and my daughter's other PC to the internet with a pluggy in wireless thing. I want to get rid of the main PC in my bedroom but still need the laptop and other PC to connect to the internet - is this possible and what do I connect the router thing to if I get rid of the main PC? Apologies, as ever, for my total lack of technical know-how. I've searched a few things but none of it makes sense to a thick twat like me. Any help much appreciated
Tuber Mirum 125 Posted April 5, 2011 If the router thingy is a wireless router thingy then you may not have to connect it to anything. It depends.
Lard Bazaar 3,799 Posted April 5, 2011 If the router thingy is a wireless router thingy then you may not have to connect it to anything. It depends. It's a router thing that is connected to both the modem and the main PC and plugs into a mains socket - when I unplug the main PC the internet disconnects on the laptop and other PC. If that helps. Can you get the internet feed (and router) shifted to your daughter's room insteadof your bedroom?

It'd be enough to connect the laptop with a cable once in a while as required. Lardy, you're going to have to get someone who understands these things to take a look at it. Terminator 13 Posted April 16, 2011 There's probably something for everyone here.... How to get the best out of your PC. It's an 83min video - ruthlessly chopped into ~10min segments. I've tried to label each section but there is some overflow between videos. 1 Hardware and intro to computer files 2 File organisation, management 3 Boot up settings 4 Media handling (burn DVDs, video streaming, codecs etc) 5 Decrypting protected DVDs, Ctrl button short-cuts 6 PC Security (Firewalls), optimizing PC speed 7 Optimizing (cont) + online help links 8 Upgrading hardware, Freeware links 9 A few more Freeware sites and video summary

Windsor 2,233 Posted June 4, 2011 I finally bought a new laptop today to replace the one which died on me a couple of months back. Anyway - it all seems to be working fine, but for one reason or another it won't let me watch youtube videos. All I get is a blank black rectangle where the video should be. I'm sure there will probably be a really obvious solution, but I'm rubbish with computers. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Windsor 2,233 Posted June 5, 2011 It's still not working on Internet Explorer. It won't let me download the most recent Adobe Flash Player. I have since discoved that Youtube is working when I use Google Chrome. So I suppose that will have to do.
Windsor 2,233 Posted September 8, 2011 If you had only seen one worm in your life, and you cut it in half, would you then have seen 1 worm, 2 worms or 3 worms?
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted September 8, 2011 If you had only seen one worm in your life, and you cut it in half, would you then have seen 1 worm, 2 worms or 3 worms? Aha, logic puzzles. A mathematician would say: First you see exactly one worm. After you cut it in half, you see two half worms. Since half a worm is not equal to a whole one, you don't see a worm anymore, so through the whole episode you saw just one worm. Biologists and philosophers may disagree. It all depends on the question: is an independently living clone of an organism the same organism or not. Stephenson (1930) reports that in specimens of Eisenia fetida it's well possible that both halves of a split worm regenerate the missing bits and live on as two worms, although he did not observe that as a fact. regards, Hein

The answer certainly isn't two - it has to be one or three. You either have to accept: 1. It will only ever be one decapitated worm. 2. You saw one worm to begin with, then you created another two worms by decapitating the original. It can't be two because when you decapitate it, how do you decided which is the original worm and which is the new worm. They both must count as new worm under that circumstance, or as being the same single original worm? I only posted this because one of my facebook friends was trying to be smart... Terminator 13 Posted September 9, 2011 If you had only seen one worm in your life, and you cut it in half, would you then have seen 1 worm, 2 worms or 3 worms? Seehen Fry asked the same question on QI. The answer was you'd just end up with a dead worm.

Madame Defarge 21 Posted September 10, 2011 Anyone know how to neutralize the smell of Febreeze? You know, that air freshener that smells like rotting pears? Oh, and this is second hand Febreeze fumes, because I don't use it. It's either coming from the vents in the apartment building or the hall. Lots of fresh air - courtesy of hurricane Irene- worked great but now it's ba---ack.

Hehe, it does smell that way, but it ain't pears. I'm not allergic to pears, but I am sensitive to certain accessories of modern post-industrial revolution life, like Febreeze, Tide, certain perfumes, hairspray, bug spray, scented candles, etc. The usual stuff (pollen, dust, mold, cat and dog fur, etc.) doesn't seem to bother me at all.
