I was going to mention it on the pretence that we assume the genes can be averaged and conclude that she's past it. However the disturbing thought of Charlie boy on the throne makes me hope she'll be as stong as an ox for at least another 20 years.

Or we have a revolution. I think my luggage allowance with Ryanair might stretch to a guillotine at Christmas if anyone fancies it?

A heavy smoking stress-case who hated aspects of his job with a passion and never really got over being dumped into the role by his brother. QEII, by contrast, takes a pride in the way she heads 'the firm.' Rupert Murdoch would be a better comparison.

Barack Obama to visit his ailing grandmother

Taking a Barack from campaigning

He must be pretty confident of winning the election, his grandma must be pretty ill, or both.

Hilary Clinton is campaigning on his behalf at the moment, she's meant to come to Minnesota at some point this week to campaign for both Obama and also for Al Franken

I would have thought Edna Jester would have been more of MPFC's choosing.

LUE ASH, Ohio -- An 89-year-old Ohio woman faces a charge of petty theft because neighborhood children said she refused to give back their football.

Edna Jester was placed under arrest last week and taken to the police station in Blue Ash.

Police say there had been an ongoing dispute over the errant football and a child's parent called to report that Jester kept the ball after it landed in her yard again.

Wing Commander Andy Green, who drove Thrust 2 above the speed of sound a while back is having another go.This time he wants to crack 1000 mph.

May be worth an outside punt.

Wing Commander Green acknowledges there will be risks involved but says the car will be designed to maximise his safety. "Does that make it zero-risk? No. Is life with zero-risk interesting? No.

What about Jean, the former Grand Duke of Luxembourg? He was born 5 january 1921 and thus he will be 88 in a few months. His wife, the Belgian princess Josephine-Charlotte died about four years ago and Jean has been looking increasingly frail ever since.

His full name and title (according to Wikipedia) is: HRH Jean Benoit Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano by the Grace of God, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Duke of Nassau, Count Palatine of the Rhine, Count of Sayn, Königstein, Katzenelnbogen and Diez, Burgrave of Hammerstein, Lord of Mahlberg, Wiesbaden, Idstein, Merenberg, Limburg and Eppstein. That would make some obit...

It's why Luxembourg never does anything. They take too long saying everyone's name.

Can anyone name a single contribution to mankind made by anyone from Luxembourg? It's not as though it's that small - half a million people, according to wiki. Of a list of famous Luxembourgeoise, I have heard of exactly two - Jacques Santer, who was EC president (not a token appointment or anything, I'm sure they really merited it), and the skier Marc Girardelli.

Maybe if Belgium gets sucked into the vortex that the Super Hard-on Collider is supposed to create (if they ever get that sucker working again), Luxembourg will go too. No one would miss it.

With a name like Giardelli, he was probably as Luxembourgeoise as Lewis Hamilton is Swiss. Or Kevin Pietersen English.

Their government putting minimal taxes on alcohol, cigarettes and petrol making it all dirt cheap and giving them a very healthy GDP.

I saw The Grand Duke etc. and The King of the Belgians when they visited where I was working (175th anniversary). We were not part of the (very few) flag waving public, it was purely by coincidence as we made our way towards the hall serving free booze.

edit - almost forgot Radio Luxembourg!

Thanks Mono, I sort of figured we'd get a Beneluxurious response from you sticking up for the Duchy. I'm not sure that setting low taxes for its citizens is much of a benefit for the rest of the world, but you're right, the locals must love it. Any idea how many tourists make it to Luxembourg every year? I'm guessing single digits.

Radio Luxembourg's website is reporting that Robert Plant is not going to tour or record a new album with Led Zeppelin. Because his solo career and that weirdness with Alison Kraus is just such a triumph. Maybe he should be a candidate for DL 2009, although it would break the wishful thinking rule. Miserable cnut.

Sorry to be predictable  If I can be of help to your calculations... I went through Lux on a coach in 1992, I went at least 3 times in 2006*, drove through it to and from the Alsace and changed trains in Lux City on the way to Triers, I didn't go in 2007 and in 2008 I drove through Lux on my way down here.

I've been to Luxembourg and even visted the radio studios. Also nominated Jean etc-etc on a deadpool when he was a mere 86 going on 87, obviously, he didn't deliver.

Anyone got some inside track on his current health?

Donatella Versace's daughter Allegra is apparently dying of anorexia

She'll be a size zero soon

The good news is this means she won't grow up to be as ugly as her mother.

A picture of the rake and the trout Allegra and her mum out on the town last night:

Well, obviously somebody can't wait until Haloween.

Tonight, I have a startling revelation. I have breaking news. In fact, maryportfuncity better make something up quick and tell his wife he spilled coffee on himself because he's going to be saturated...

Joanne Evans, 24, is suffering from a rare form of cancer which effects (one in ten billion.) The cancer itself has only been recorded 30 times within the last 50 years all over the globe. Given the fact that she is mentioned in three articles, it's possible she receives the qualified recognition. Ladies and gentleman, we may be looking at the most valuable joker in the year 2009.

I'm not 100% sure she'll receive the obituary coverage but it's candidates like these who's qualifications should be a subject of debate.

Yeah, thanks for that BS. I think we've established we should debate it. In fact some banter next Saturday may well go in that direction. Re picking them; I doubt the DDP team next year will be as full. It was a full-on attempt this year to snag some unique picks in a crowded DDP that prompted all the talk. Only one of the UPs down, and she snagged no national coverage.

Bugger me sideways. It's hard to say this Banshees but you're right. She fulfills all the deadpool qualifications, joker bonanza etc, and yet "playing" a silly game with this poor girl's life does indeed seem warped to me. She's famous only for her sickness. There's a huge gulf between this woman and someone like Amy Winehouse whose decline is totally self-inflicted.

If she lives long enough I think I would need to include her to have any chance of winning the DDP and since winning is the only point of entering a team I think this means I will not be entering next year's DDP.

I don't appear to be as intellectually detached as some or as dispassionate as others to challenge the boundaries as MPFC does so admirably - I mean that. It's only if we explore our inner recesses where we might find emotions that we prefer to hide - as MPFC does with his "enjoyment" of motor sport deaths on film - that we can be truly honest with ourselves. I admire that honesty, after watching those self same films out of a mixture of curiosity and, yes, possibly, titillation. But those things do leave me with a feeling of distaste as if I have been watching some kind of "snuff" pornography.

The debate over the eligibility of such cases in the DDP was started by OoO and it's probably worth extending. This is one such case. Perhaps there should be room for OoO to make his own ad hoc judgements case by case rather than rely on a majority sentiment. I think this one should be excluded. Anyway if it's in, I'm out.

I think this needs to pass to OoO for arbitration as she is known only for being ill. At least with Uttley and Birch, they are known,

albeit only among enthusiasts for something other than their illness.

If OoO allows this to pass then if I'm to have any ambitions to win the DDP, this would be a gift horse I cannot ignore

and I would therefore 'hold my nose' and include the unfortunate Ms Evans...

This topic seems to pop up every now and then and although I've already expressed myself, please indulge me to do so again. Death pools are not morality plays. We don't choose celebrities because we like them or hate them or because we want them to die or hope they don't. We chose them (or at least we should) because we think they will die. In my Death League, letting emotion get into the mix would certainly make you a loser. Regarding her eligibility, I was led to believe that if the death is covered in the British press, it's a score, am I wrong? I have no problem with why a person is famous. Just because it's extreme old age or due to an illness, what does it matter? Terry Schiavo is a perfect case. She was certainly not famous for anything other than her illness which led to a legal fight, but can we dispute the fact that she was very famous and a cause celebre for weeks? When we open the can of worms of why someone's famous or whether we feel for them as eligibility, we are only introducing an argument which has no end or logical answer.

You don't have to pick this woman to stand a chance of winning the DDP. I won't be picking her and I intend to do well. It's all dreadfully sad, but it's a non story as far as I can see, people get diagnosed with terminal cancer all the time, I don't know what makes her case so special. I wouldn't be at all certain she will get a UK obit either. Obscurity beckons before death.

Well you've got a (likely) title to defend and that's fightin' talk, son!

Well, she'd be 24 points as a joker but will have some teams backing, whereas you could pick a unique 50-something and get the same amount (if only I can find one of course....).

Hmmm...I'm making no decisions untill OoO runs the rule over it, but its a clear case of someone only known for illness (perhaps it could be allowed, but with a significant points penalty) and thus more clear cut than some other people...
