He played in the 1951 title winning season but didn't get a medal as he hadn't played the requisite number of games, because of a knee injury. Sad news, although you forgot his most important claim to fame, playing once for Reading in 1942. Discovered Nicky Butt and Andy Ritchie and was one of those inspirational and important people in football that never got the full credit they deserved. His bushy sideburns earned him the nickname "Mr Pickwick". Not a very good picture in the article, so the one below should server as a better reminder. He played for the Reds for 18 years and was the manager before Shanks. Also played three times for England (oldest living ex-international?) and played one first-class cricket match for Gloucestershire, scoring a princely 14 runs. Picked by four DDP teams too. He also played for Southend and Oxford. He was forced to quit the game a few years ago due to a heart condition which was revealed could kill him if he ever played again.
