Peter Fregene, Nigerian international footballer and 1968 Summer Olympic squad member is in very poor health. This isn't exactly the first time, he has been paralyzed since 2001 and has suffered multiple strokes in the past.

This article describes the situation as "very touch-and-go":

If you touch him, he will go?

Danish-Norwegian manager, Roald Poulsen, dead at 73.

Biggest achievement was winning the Danish league with OB in 1989 and the Danish Cup in 1992. He also managed Zambia and a few teams from Qatar.

Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent dies at 25. He had only been drafted in December 2022 (the MLS has a yearly draft for college age players - he was drafted 28th out of 88 possible picks), and appeared in 6 games for the Philadelphia Union II - their reserve side. No cause of death has been announced, but he was in the ICU for several days prior to his death.

Cooper is the 7th Leeds player from the starting line-up of the 1970 FA Cup final against Chelsea. They've also lost sub Mick Bates a couple of weeks ago (as well as manager Don Revie). In contrast, Chelsea have lost just 4 of their starting XI (plus manager Dave Sexton).

Of the survivors, Chelsea sub Marvin Hinton is the oldest followed by Eddie McCreadie (both 81), then Johnny Giles, 80. The youngest is Eddie Gray at a mere 73 (as is David Harvey, who replaced Gary Sprake for the replay). Chelsea's youngest survivors are David Webb & John Dempsey, both 75.

John Dempsey dead at 78.

Was looking at his career history on Wikipedia, surely this takes the prize for "football team that sounds most like it committed several atrocities during wartime"

Portuguese football boss and crook Pinto da Costa not dead as it was rumoured today (hey, it's 2024), but has been suffering from prostate cancer since 2021 and reportedly deteriorated recently.

Of course his family insists he is completely fine.

Tony Mowbray resigns as Birmingham manager to seek further treatment and recover. The way the various statements have been worded over the last few weeks, it sounds like he might be in worse health than initially alluded to

It was/is bowel cancer. Appears surgery probably saved him https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0k3gr12

George Burley having (unspecified type and stage) cancer is an interesting one, as he's approaching 70 and has been an alcoholic for large chunks of his life. Remember Christophe Daum, one to watch imo.

Burley having treatment and hopes to have surgery. Sounds positive but I agree with msc, one to watch.

Not the first notable North African footballer to die recently and at a fairly young age too

Notable ? In France we follow quite closely North African football and I’ve never heard of him. He only got 4 caps with his country.

I'd say that anyone who gets capped by their country could reasonably be described as "notable".

That was what I meant. A lower bar than 'household name'

Pinto da Costa hospitalised in serious condition .

Other sources reported they were routine check-ups and he has already been discharged.

EDIT: fake news according to friends and family.
