Sir Creep 7,070 Posted July 7, 2016 Former U.S. Army Pvt. Horace Whitley Appleby, a war hero, died Sunday in Toledo, Ohio. He was 102. Last year, at the age of 101 and 70 years after his service, he was awarded long-overdue medals honoring his World War II heroics. In a ceremony in northwest Ohio, Appleby was finally given the Silver Star he earned for saving the life of a fellow soldier on Jan. 6, 1945. Arsewipe 202 Posted August 4, 2016 The well-known Luftwaffe fighter ace will reach his 99th birthday on November the 1st. Considering he's one of the greatest aces of WWII and the greatest living ace, he is topic-worthy. He died three weeks before this post, I guess you didn't keep in touch very often.... His death was not reported until May. Not my fault if no one cared about him. Who are you actually talking about? Drol created a new thread under the guy's name and made his post. Several other posts were made and Paul then deleted the thread and moved the posts to this thread but he didn't include the guy's name in the process. See posts 158 to 164 inclusive.

Cat O'Falk 3,290 Posted August 4, 2016 I remember that now you mention it, but what IS the man's name? I can't remember I'm afraid but it looks like Arsewipe has done some detective work based on when the guy's 99th birthday would have been and therefore the date of birth. Cue Drol and Arsewipe. gcreptile 10,979 Posted September 7, 2016 The last of the Navajo Code Talkers, Chester Nez, is dead at 93: http://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/last-of-the-navajo-code-talkers-has-died-aged-93.html#.VTzph4-Myno.facebook The Navajo Code was formed out of a Native American Language to safely communicate on the Pacific Front of the World War. Hmm, apparently Chester wasn't the last. I have this on Bahe Ketchum, 96. http://www.abc15.com/news/region-northern-az/other/navajo-code-talker-bahe-ketchum-dies-in-flagstaff-at-age-96. Was Bahe the last? I'm not speculating. The mystery intensifies with another Navajo code talker, Kee Etsicitty, dying at 92 on July 21st according to Wikipedia: http://www.kvoa.com/story/29600997/navajo-code-talker-from-new-mexico-dies You know, after a fair number of pints I have been known to speak Navajo Code. SC The next Navajo Code talker is dead, Ernest Yazhe at 92: http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/Navajo-Code-Talker-Has-Died-365459131.html Another Navajo Code talker, Joe Kellwood, dead at 95: http://www.12news.com/news/local/valley/navajo-code-talker-joe-kellwood-passes-away-at-95/314468295 At least, they don't call him the last one. Ulitzer95 12,654 Posted September 8, 2016 Article notes that there are less than 20 still alive now. There seems to be much confusion online that so many Navajo code talkers have died since Chester Nez. The media were wrong about Nez being the last Navajo code talker. He was the last of the original 29.

My dilemma as well, I find it helps to pick them less than 12 months before they die. But I can't usually figure out how to do that

There's a lot to be gained by learning about the lives of remarkable people. That is one of the strengths of this site.
