Here is a list of surviving People's Artists of the USSR. Remarkably, they all they all tend to receive an obituary in their home country (and usually one in Russia too). Many of these, particularly the Russians, are still popular and prominent even today. After the fall of the Soviet Union they remained well connected and some went into politics themselves. You'll often see them at photoshoots with Vladimir Putin or waving Russian flags at events in support of the annexation of Crimea.

Dead. Vladimir Etush.

TPB also brought something new to the table there, as I was unaware of the Iffland Ring.

A bad year for great actors. First Albert Finney, now Bruno Ganz. He starred in Eric Rohmer's "La marquise d'O". One of my favorite films.

I wonder who will get the Iffland-Ring for the most significant and worthy actor of the German-speaking theatre now.

Jens Harzer gets Iffland Ring.

Not a name I know, but apparently acclaimed in Germany, which is sort of the point.

The Finnish Boxer is dead at age from Alzheimer's 82

No English Language Obit's yet,but a Biopic about his life "The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Maki" was screened at Cannes, and did the awards circuit a few years ago. It was reviewed in The Guardian,NY Times etc.,so it's likely some English Language obit's will come in the next few days

Swedish actress Bibi Andersson being reported dead by foreign sources.

Pick for the Silver Screen DP @Bibliogryphon.

Wonderful lady. A great of the European silver screen and an Ingmar Bergman favourite. Curious how the UK media seems to be enclosed in a self imposed bubble failing to report this, whereas it is news across Europe and the US!

High profilic German character actress Hannelore Elsner died on Easter sunday at age 76. This is quite shocking and sad,  her cancer diagnosis wasn`t made public before.

Very sad, she was quite the respected actress.
