Windsor 2,233 Posted January 1, 2012 Joost van der Westhuizen is an interesting pick who I was actually aware of when choosing my picks. There is no doubt that he is ill and worth a shed load of points, but the prognosis in May 2011 was an 80% chance of living 2-5 years. That suggests to me that he will live to 2013 at least...unless I've read it wrong.
Red Flag 84 Posted January 1, 2012 Indeed, but ALS can be erratic. He also had a suspected heart attack in 2009. Plus if he does go, as you say, he's worth a few points It's a shame. I saw him play for the Boks against New Zealand in the 99 World Cup. Great player. Seems like a cursed squad too. Apparently Andre Venter from the same side has suffered with a spinal condition for over 5 years (and could well have been the better pick, had I known about it before I submitted), and Ruben Kruger died of brain cancer in 2010

ALS i think is the worst disease a human being can be stuck down with feel really bad for the guy. I have noticed quiet a few rugby players seem to get ALS wonder if there is a connection . Magere Hein 1,400 Posted January 2, 2012 I have noticed quiet a few rugby players seem to get ALS wonder if there is a connection . Wikipedia's article about ALS has the following paragraph: The very high incidence of the disease among Italian soccer players (more than five times higher than normally expected) has raised the concern of a possible link between the disease and the use of pesticides on the soccer fields (several of which have been linked to neuronal toxicity). A 2004 Italian study trying to link a high incidence of ALS in soccer players to performance-enhancing drugs failed when the group was compared to cyclists that also used performance-enhancing drugs but without contracting ALS. A possible conclusion was that soccer players experience frequent head trauma (heading the ball, falls and collisions sustained during games) compared to cyclists who wear head protection and rarely have falls. Similar things may be at work in ruggers. Do boxers show a high incidence of ALS? regards, Hein

DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted January 2, 2012 I wanna know what everyone thinks about DDT's list. Think he'll be as tough this year? Not a chance. I struggled a bit for ideas this year, so I doubt 2012 will be a vintage preformance. I'm a bit like the Ronnie O'Sullivan of deadpooling - unstoppable when it's going right, pretty average when it's going wrong . Anyway, here's my list. I'm hoping my joker will be a unique pick (probably no chance), is as ill as he says he is (possibly half a chance) and that he gets a UK obit (a pretty good chance). I'd also be very pleased if Joseph Kony gets shot to pieces. 1) Xolile Mngeni (Suspect in Anni Dewani murder case) JOKER 2) Jock Hobbs 3) Dame Lesley Strathie 4) Jon Lord 5) Sir Tom Finney 6) Joseph Kony 7) Bert Sugar (boxing journalist) 8) Etta James 9) Jim Stynes 10) Abdelbaset al-Mehrahi 11) Winnie Johnson 12) Masao Yoshida 13) Robin Gibb 14) Penny Marshall 15) Andrew Smith (Partner of Russell T Davies) 16) Rochus Misch 17) Miguel de la Madrid 18) Malam Bacai Sanha 19) Dr Anthonia Onuoha 20) Nelson Mandela

msc 18,479 Posted January 2, 2012 Having seen DDT's team above, half of it seems pretty good picks to cark it this year, and some of the rest I don't know the current health of - Bert Sugar and Jon Lord for example. He'll be right up there. Though, its hard to say much beyond "they look good on paper" right now. I'm sure absolutely brilliant DDP teams on paper have been utterly bollocks in practice.
