Leon Bernicoff, star of Gogglebox, has died aged 83.

Another one I dropped this year from last year's main DDP team.

C'est la vie...

Well played, GCR.

I may be dissuading...it depends on whether I am going to pick her myself. Am I going to?

If she stays it could be trouble

If she goes it could double (points if she's your joker)

So you got to let her know

Should she stay or should she go?

Death bed or not....I'm not sure what anyone thinks propels Ami Brown past the likes of Ahmad Givens, who garnered me tons of points elsewhere, but who is still waiting for a QO here 3 years later.  Funny no one even discusses the QO issue with her here, like it's a given.  Now I don't live in the U.K., and maybe Alaska Bush People has held on to the #1 overall rated tv show for 18 months running.....or maybe not.  The show probably means nothing over there, and the individuals that make up the show even less.  At least Givens' (nick) name was in the title of the show...and we see where that got him.
None of this is to say I ain't seriously considering Ms. Brown, but her QO chances I would align with those of Mr. Givens.

Ahmad Givens got a QO in Daily Mail, anyone who stars in a even semi popular reality show in the last decade will nab at least that for deathpools where a UK obit is required.

Good overall point with one tiny flaw. Not only did Ahmad get a Qualifying obit, he was on Spade's winning DDP team that year!

And yes, I am going to post this even if the Captain ninja-replied.

The reason we are confident of a Qo is the Daily Mail keep covering the story and have formed for covering reality TV deaths.

Huh.... I had just signed up to DL but was under the impression he never got a QO.  I stand corrected (as usual).

Ahmad Givens was a good example of how Spade led the way for many changes in DDP strategy - namely he caught on to the fact that starring in a reality TV show (even if it was cancelled some years ago) guaranteed you a Mail obit before most other poolers did. It was never even on my mind to pick him that year.

It's an evolution of sorts.

There was a deadpool.

It got won with 20 points once.

Then there was Ali, who used early number crunching, but couldn't upset the "pick all the old dying dudes" people under the standardised 5 points per hit system.

Then the rules changed to what we know today.

Then DDT showed up, with his ability to sniff out those about to snuff. (Is it good research skills, or is he actually the Reaper? I prefer the latter explanation, his off years in the DDP are meant to put us off the trail..)

Then Spade came along: equally good research game, but with more specialist know how (ie what papers obit what types of celeb, how to look for folk off the radar entirely) and blew away the rest of the field.

So the rest of the field decide to learn from Spade...

Now we're waiting for someone to take the next step and outperform all the Spade clones.

Which is a bit of a nuisance for those of us who just twigged how to get to 90 points when that's no longer enough!

Interestingly enough, the presumed winner this year utilized a previously-mentioned Spade maxim in a year he didn't use it. (guaranteed five pointer is underrated in value) I mean Soares was probably picked in the hopes he made the Drop 40, but still...

I am aiming to follow that one in 2018, though I figured 6 points is close enough to 5...

It is a great maxim and one that my reluctance to follow this year almost certainly cost me... I think that front-loading my team with 50/50 youngsters (namely SKS and GG) is what killed me, when opting for Mary Valastro (the last cut from my team) would have seen me win it with breathing space.

There's a good rule that top-tier Scrabble players live by: don't fall in love with words. For instance, while "futharc" is a fascinating word, it scores less points than "twelfth". You'll always do better with a dull high-scorer than a fascinating low-scorer. The same with deadpooling: don't fall in love with a pick just because they're interesting. A knock-in Welsh MEP is a guaranteed obit, for instance.

Except the correct spelling is either 'futhark' or 'futhork', both of which actually score more than 'twelfth'.

:P

Edit: Unless if you meant 'futhorc', that would score less.

When you say "here", do you mean the Derby Dead Pool?

The DDP has no connection with this site, but there are other deadpool games existing here which have various QO standards, not all as stringent as DDP.

Yes should have said DDP, I guess I'm DDP-centric as I stare at my list I've created 1-20 and no entries yet. :(

Ah, see I've always used the OED when playing Scrabble, which doesn't recognise it as so.

But even still, an alternative spelling of the word can still be used to score more than 'twelfth' and impress your opponents with your knowledge of Norse runic writing systems.

Doesn't mean much when they also accept "Accetped".
