I had him on my long list for the 2020 Unusual Suspects team but is a hit for me in Arghton's Deadpool

Being a rubbish songwriter myself, it's time to salute the people who make the pop musical world go round. Most aren't on the verge of death, but never mind (all over 60, though). Off the top of my head, my living greats include:

Tom T Hall

Tom T Hall being reported dead on Twitter.

Awaiting the usual, seems legit...EDIT: https://eu.tennessean.com/story/entertainment/music/2021/08/20/tom-t-hall-dies-85-franklin-tennessee-storyteller-country-music/8219502002/

All I need to say is Harper Valley PTA. Nuff said, respect!

Edit: DDP Pick, in case of Qobits..

Cannot find any coverage of this at all other than the tweet,  but apparently Waldo Holmes, writer of Rock The Boat by The Hues Corporation died at the beginning of the month aged 92:

Daily Mail QO for Andrea Martin.

Still no cause given but she's getting a lot of coverage, likely because of how relatively fresh a lot of these huge hits are in people's minds.

The list of people who wrote two number #1 singles in a year must be pretty small (under 100?) and she was one of them (2003, the aforementioned "Breathe" and "Loneliness" by Tomcraft).

Off the top of my head: 1970s/80s

Lennon

McCartney

Gary Glitter (with the late Mike Leander)

Noddy Holder and Jim Lea

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus

Bee Gees (must have done, surely given who else they wrote for)

Chris Stein (Blondie)

Sting

Paul Weller

Andy Hill for Bucks Fizz

Holly Johnson and other members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood

The late George Michael

Madonna

Stock Aitken and Waterman

Phil Collins

Haven't even looked at the 1960s - there will be plenty there I'd imagine.

Not sure Phil Collins should be on that list

His biggest hits were cover versions and Genesis have never has a Number 1

Actually not, the 2nd no.1 hit in 1987 was the Elvis Presley cover. West End Girls and Heart were 1985 and 1988.

Bruce Welch was songwriter on Bachelor Boy and Summer Holiday alongside Cliff?

I was thinking Elvis but his songwriters were all over the place.

50s has Burt Bacharach-Hal David in 1958 and 60s has Doc Pomus-Mort Shuman in 1961, at a quick glance.

Mick and Keith too.

Huh, my favourite Pet Shop Boys track was kept off the top spot by Rick Astley!

What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

Oh, one of the all time greats managed it too - Roy Orbison (and Bill Dees) with Pretty Woman and It's Over in 1964.

There were so many hitmaking machines back in the day, hard to list them all beyond the Original Post here.

Lost interest in the charts in the late 1990s so need to ask some of our younger poppers. No point in making a Wiki page, I'd imagine, given the ravages of admins there at the mo.

One that might pass you by is Tony Macauley who wrote both of David Soul's No.1 singles in 1977

Could be a thread by itself....

... Gary Barlow (Take That)

Noel Gallagher (Oasis, but apparently not until 2005!)

Cathy Dennis (Kylie Minogue & S Club 7 - 2001)

Edit: Just had a look at the pure numbers... you know, since about 2010, apparently every song has had at least 10 songwriters, which is why people like David Guetta might technically count - but, in my opinion, shouldn't really.

Eminem in 2002 should count though.
