Toast 16,139 Posted February 10, 2016 Idly wondering what had become of Jordan (not that one - the woman on the right), I learn that she is now a veterinary nurse who breeds Burmese cats.
Sir Creep 7,070 Posted March 19, 2016 Beginning in the late 1940s, Martin and Elliot Gantmacher popularized the button-down shirt as a de rigueur garment for Ivy League and Madison Avenue men. They were so taken with their success, in fact, that not long after their company was rebranded Gant in 1949, the brothers adopted the label as their surname. Elliot Gant, the last of the founders, died on March 12 in Boston. He was 89.SC
En Passant 3,741 Posted March 19, 2016 I've never known wtf a button down shirt is anyway. So I looked it up, and apparently, it's a shirt, with buttons down the front, so in other words then, a shirt. There's some bollocks in this fashion business.

I thought it might be the sort that has buttons on the collar, that was fashionable in the 1970s.

One place did say collar, but the preponderance of those I saw just mean down the front, where, you know, a shirt has buttons. Ludicrous. Probably American in origin due to them being a bit like that, 'it's not a sweatshirt or a Tee-shirt, so we have to specify its a "button down" shirt', or summat (sue me for the generalisation of an entire nation), but I got bored before delving that deeply. Unsurprisingly....
