He played the whole three games of El Salvador as they were knocked out in the group stage. Octopus of Odstock 2,187 Posted March 1, 2023 Fontaine's death is significant in World Cup terms as it removes the oldest top scorer and the only one living pre-1974. 1930-1970 are all dead (as is 1982) so Gregorz Lato (1974) is now the oldest. Also, although 3 squad players remain, none of the French team that played in 1958 are still alive. They were doing remarkably well until relatively recently, but they've all passed on now.
