And also the most recent player to be on the bench against England in any match to die. Sad news.

5 and a bit years is not too bad -sadly.

2014 - 1st death 3 years

2010 - 1st death 7 years

2006 - 1st death 4 years

2002 - 1st death 1 year

1998 - 1st death 3 years

1994 - of course, the first death was whilst the tournament was still taking place, hopefully a situation never to be repeated.

1990 - 1st death 3 years

1986 - 1st death 3 years

1982 - 1st death 5 months

Of course, there are more players now than in previous editions too.

The Spanish wiki have long known that Ranulfo Cortes (Wiki) died a long time ago but they don't know when. Now we have a date so we can officially say that all members of the 1954 Mexican squad are dead. That made Antonio Carbajal the last living member of the 1954 squad as well as 1950.

Sergio Bravo, Mexican player at the 1954 World Cup, is indeed dead in 1997 aged 70.

About his 1954 teammate, Cortés, I found an article about a player named Arnulfo Cortés, who (like Ranulfo Cortés) was a forward and played for CD Oro. He died in 1994. Maybe it’s the same player ?

I already found that source last year, @whoismakoto !

Definitely the same player as his Spanish wiki said that he played for Guadalajara in 1955-56 which is mentioned in the article

I assume Mario Zagallo, Giovanni Trappatoni, Gianni Rivera, Just Fontaine, Francisco Gento and Luis Suarez will, all for different reasons. And maybe Kurt Hamrin will, too.

I can see Lorenzo Buffon getting one if he dies when his cousin Gianluigi is still a player.

Crossposting Kurt Hamrin has died after a very long illness.

Just 7, although McMillan never actually travelled to Switzerland.

Turkey allegedly have 3: Coskun Tas, Mehmet Dincer (not convinced he's alive) and Sukru Ersoy.

Uruguay also have 3: Omar Mendez, Roberto Leopardi and Jose Santamaria.

Italy's Gino Pivatelli makes up the numbers.

Goal scorer in the famous Battle of Santiago, QO a cert imo.

"Let's hope they never face again."

No no David, let's hope they draw each other more often.

The ref was so upset by Toro and both teams antics that he later invented the red card. True story!
