Jose Antonio Reyes, who represented Spain at the 2006 finals, dead at 35 from a traffic accident, reportedly: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.marca.com%2Ffutbol%2F2019%2F06%2F01%2F5cf25787ca474148698b459e.html

Not sure if he actually got a game but was in the squad. Played for Arsenal during a successful period, I understand.

Really sad news about Jose Antonio Reyes  he was a good player, shows how unpredictable predicting death is who would of thought Reyes would go before the likes of Gazza, Jimmy Greaves and Nobby Stiles

Appearently, he was driving at 120 mph (not far off 200 km/h). Killed 2 passengers in the process too.

Edit: That's the second player from Group H of the 2006 World Cup to die in a vehicle crash (Andriy Gusin in 2014).

Might see him miss out on a place on BBC Sporty tribute video then.

As far as I can see only one passenger (His cousin) died while the other is in intensive care with bad burns - the daily mail headline doesn't match the rest of the article.

Could be worse, could be Vaclav Drobny (death by bobsleigh) or 90s wasted talent Peter Dubovsky (death by selfie at waterfall before selfies were even invented)...

On the Time Added thread, Maryportfuncity ponders if Broadis is the oldest living international and Fernando Roldan's name pops up. Well, I do believe he's still alive. The last details were in 2016; https://www.latercera.com/noticia/manuel-arriagada-a-esta-uc-hay-que-ponerle-mas-corazon/ where he is listed as being in a rest home.

Having done as thorough a search as I can, I strongly believe a lot of the 1950 players that tle about have gone. Sure, there might be the odd one alive that I've got down as dead, but I can see it being no more than 2 out.

So for 1950, I believe this to be as accurate as I can

1950 World Cup – 8 survivors

MexicoPlayerDoB/Age
1Antonio Carbajal(1929-06-07)7 June 1929 (aged 21)

ChilePlayerDoB/ Age
8Luis Lindorfo Mayanés(1925-01-15)15 January 1925 (aged 25)
9Manuel Muñoz(1928-04-28)28 April 1928 (aged 22)
12Andrés Prieto(1928-12-19)19 December 1928 (aged 21)

ItalyPlayerDoB/Age
8Giampiero Boniperti(1928-07-04)4 July 1928 (aged 21)
-2Attilio Giovannini(1924-07-30)30 July 1924 (aged 25)

-                  Emilio Caprile                      (1928)

ParaguayPlayerDoB/Age
9Darío Saguier(1926-09-11)11 September 1926 (aged 23)

Definitely all dead: Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, Sweden, England, USA

Believed all dead (but no information to confirm); Bolivia, Switzerland, Yugoslavia

Roldan WAS still alive until a couple of days ago. Giovaninni now becomes the oldest living from 1950. If Park-Jae Seung from 1954 is still alive (believe so) then he's the oldest living (born 1923)

Gerald Messlender, Austrian player who appears to have been an unused sub in the second round game against Northern Ireland in the 1982 Finals, dead at 57: https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=https://www.weltfussball.at/news/_n3685696_/ex-teamspieler-gerald-messlender-verstorben/&prev=search

Another unused player from 1982 was Roberto Bailey of Honduras. He was killed in a car accident a few weeks ago after returning from a funeral.

Just to say that apart from the aforementioned Sammy Chapman, one other 2019 non-playing squad member death is that of 1954 Swiss player Ivo Frosio back in April.

Also found out Franz Swoboda of Austria died in 2017.

Totals are IIRC

8 living from 1950

39 from 1954

77 from 1958

Good research. How long until your British players list is done?

Well to be totally honest, I was doing very well until May when I was commissioned to write a motor racing book. So it's come to a bit of a standstill but I still intend to complete it (oldest footballers) this year.
