I watched Liz Truss waffle unknowledgeably and dangerously about stuff she clearly didn't know enough about yesterday and then almost straight after heard an interview with Rory Stewart - what a contrast.

Knowledgeable, thoughtful, balanced and statesmanlike - he may not be everyone's cup of tea and he may wear the wrong hat for most but he certainly is a cut above most of the shambles currently leading the country.

EDIT: So when you're eating your nuclear mushroom this is who you can thank.

Russia blames Liz Truss for nuclear 'special alert'

Earlier, UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace downplayed the nuclear "special alert" announced by Vladimir Putin, suggesting that the Russian president wanted to distract people from his forces' slower-than-expected progress in the invasion.

Wallace told the BBC: "We will not do anything to escalate in that area, we will not do anything to feed any miscalculation - we take it very, very seriously. But at the moment this is a battle of rhetoric that President Putin is deploying."

Now, the Kremlin has suggested comments from Foreign Secretary Liz Truss were the reason that Russia put its nuclear forces on heightened alert, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

"There had been statements by various representatives at various levels about possible conflict situations and even collisions and clashes between Nato and the Russian Federation," said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Vladimir Putin.

"We consider such statements absolutely unacceptable. I will not name the authors of these statements, although it was the British foreign secretary."

It's not clear which comments by Truss the Russian government objects to, although on Sunday she said she said she would support individuals from the UK joining an international force to fight for Ukraine.

John Bercow has been banned from getting parliamentary passes in future after the report confirms that he’s a bullying wanker. Good call welcoming him to Labour, Keir. Fuck sake.

Also very much looking forward to Priti Patel’s lifetime ban from parliament for exactly the same reason.

Seems to be a growing list of incumbent MPs announcing they're not going to contest another General Election. Disproportionate amount of Labour names so far, and a few big hitters (Harman, Bradshaw, Hodge, Winterton). Corbyn will have to step down in Islington as well as there's no way he'll be readmitted to the Labour Party.

Members of Parliament not standing for re-election
MP Seat First elected Party Date announced
Douglas Ross Moray 2017   Conservative 14 October 2021
Alex Cunningham Stockton North 2010   Labour 25 November 2021
Margaret Hodge Barking 1994   Labour 2 December 2021
Barry Sheerman Huddersfield 1979   Labour 4 December 2021
Harriet Harman Camberwell and Peckham 1982   Labour 7 December 2021
Alan Whitehead Southampton Test 1997   Labour 14 January 2022
Charles Walker Broxbourne 2005   Conservative 1 February 2022
Ben Bradshaw Exeter 1997   Labour 3 February 2022
Kate Green Stretford and Urmston 2010   Labour 10 February 2022
Wayne David Caerphilly 2001   Labour 11 February 2022
Paul Blomfield Sheffield Central 2010   Labour 21 February 2022

2010 - 148

2015 - 90

2019 - 74

That list will expand considerably over the next 24 months. Charles Walker is a proper loss to the Tory party. Labour names early, maybe due to them being asked if they'll stand again already (though they can change their minds nearer the date if they've said they plan to run again).

Tory MPs perhaps waiting to see if the boundary changes go through first.

Strangely this gets no mention in this story about Douglas Ross.

I feel totally vindicated by this.

I'm in a group chat on WhatsApp with lots of political types. I said that I wholeheartedly believed that Douglas Ross and the Scottish Tories (about 2/3 of their MSPs) were making a huge mistake by calling on Boris to go in January, and that he they would regret it when Boris is still there in 6 months time. Still got til July to wait but pretty certain I'll win this bet now. I've been in this game for a long time now and I know when a PM is a dead man walking. Boris has come close but the scales haven't been tipped.

Ofc, much of this is incidental. Now that children are getting their limbs blown off by a mad dictator at the other side of our continent, nobody gives two shits about a fucking cake. That said, the story was starting to die weeks before this conflict kicked off anyway. Sure, it would've died a much slower death, but it would have ultimately resulted in zero consequences for the PM. It's not a resignation matter.

She has her own  photographer and the attempt to create the stateswoman like images is fairly obvious. So too those moments, like  this morning, where she's on a point she thinks bolsters her blatant leadership attempts and she goes all Maggie Thatcher in measured responses indicating she's in charge and powerful (like we have her to thank that Nazanin is on the way home).

Oh aye, and...given that Truss will be looking to make political mileage out of Nazanin's return, we're right in assuming Richard has been devastated and devoted in equal measure over the last few years, right? It'd be an umcomfortable turn up if sometime tonight the neighbours heard shouts of "You can kick this slag out for starters!"

The sheer audacity of Sir Porkalot here. Food bank reliance went up nearly 2,000% under his watch.

Him volunteering there is like smashing a truck into someone’s living room then offering to run the hoover round.

Finally, as a parting comment, CUNT.

Worse than that, he's milking the Ukraine situation by going to Poland.

However:

The Ukrainian ambassador to the UK, Vadym Prystaiko, welcomed the support from the British public earlier on Friday.

But he said "money would be better placed" rather than bulky items.

Mr Prystaiko added: "The message is simple: if you can, give a couple of pounds rather than bring stuff in a bag."
