By-Election Bingo

Deselection will not impact this game as they are selecting the candidate for the next election.

True. Although they could resign and stand as an independent if they think the gamble was worth it ie nothing to lose ultimately.

There is nothing to stop them leaving the party but keeping the seat. What Douglas Carswell and Mark Reckless did was to cause disruption. It is convention that you resign on switching parties rather than the requirement.

Shaun Woodward didn't. There is a Wiki list of politicians who "crossed the floor" but its badly written as they've included folk who had the whip removed from them for stuff like Nadine Dorries.

Quentin Davies jumped from Tory to Labour in 2007 and didn't resign either.

Again true. It was the disruption element I was thinking of. It's one thing having a base of local activists who influence candidate selection and another to select someone who the electorate will vote for.

and Shaun Woodward was MP for Whitny which is the only way they would ever get a Labour MP.

It was Shaun Woodward - even then, it's still debatable!

So, rule wise, if a Labour MP jumps and decides the "Socialism" announcement today gives him/her a chance of getting back in against an official Labour candidate and then this bet pays off and they come back...

Does it still core in By-Election Bingo or do we count that as continued service because they were never officially replaced?

If they resign as an MP thereby triggering a by-election you get 10 points if they are reelected as an independent then that is halved to 5. If Labour held the seat you keep all 10.

I could have - like - found the appropriate post, but appreciate you making that clear.

Couldn't he have just done a David Davis and stood for the party as an anti-party candidate?

On my team

Bring it on!

If he stands in the by-election and wins you only get half points.

Does running on an anti-runway platform mean standing still or going backwards?

Goldsmith's going, that's finally points on the board for me.

Actually starting to get excited! If I'm right (and I'm pretty sure I am), while Mr Goldsmith's principled stand is points for about 8 people, none of Rockhopper, Young Maryport or The Engineer picked him so...I'm winning?!

Sure, it won't last, but we're 18 months in nearly now and I'm winning a deadpool (that's not really about death but still...)

Apologies by my (probably not-that-missed) absence, I have recently (September) started teacher training and it's rather demanding. I still check in periodically (particularly when I have points to check!) but don't contribute so often at the moment.

Yeah, principled politician, who'd have thought it.

Young Maryport has Simon Danczuk - or however you spell it - I keep thinking he's one more meltdown away from forced de-selection, or summat

Goldsmith will be only worth 5 points initially. if he loses the by-election you get the other 5 but if he wins he stays in play.
