Bibliogryphon 9,597 Posted June 27, 2016 Lib Dems are gearing up for a General Election which they will campaign on the platform of rejoining (not leaving) the EU. This could be interesting because they could essentially become the opposite of UKIP a single issue pro-European party. Like UKIP it may gain them some friends in particular constituencies. If Corbyn goes this might be more significant.

YoungWillz 21,083 Posted June 27, 2016 All this, all of it is just the Establishment trying to give the people a good kicking for voting the way they did. We are still in the EU now, nothing in fact has changed now. The markets take any story and twist it to their own advantage to make money for themselves. Nobody is sad about Labour politicians resigning their cushy jobs..they are sad that they are not resigning their cushy seats. They say the party is out of touch with its supporters - no, YOU are out of touch with your potential voters, get out of politics altogether. People are further sad I'd suggest that not more heads have toppled in the Tory party. The craven dishonesty and self-interest demonstrated by the majority of the Cabinet is being rewarded by themselves staying in post to try and implement the very thing they disagree with the most. For example, the supposed threat now is put up taxes on everyone to make up for bankers tax leaving the country. Not what the people want, you're moving too slow on tax collection on the people who have been and who are supposed to be paying tax NOW. Nobody is talking about the opportunities a Brexit vote gives because they don't believe it. Anyway, Cameron's about to speak, rant over for now.

He might struggle to get through the knockout rounds which are voted for by MPs. Might have missed his chance. Leadsom's admitted she's considering a bid. Stock has risen in the referendum campaign and will almost certainly have a big part to play in the new government. Boris is standing, Gove isn't, May's exploring her options. George hasn't ruled himself out either, bless him, but he hasn't got a cat in hell's chance. The short campaign is good for Boris, as it's harder for those seeking to unite support to beat him to mobilise effectively in time. Nominations open Wednesday evening and close Thursday noon, so those considering their runs have got to get their shit together in short order.

charon 4,943 Posted June 27, 2016 Incidentally drol, given your background, I'd have thought you'd have a wee soft spot for the French. It was one of their Aces that shot down planes from the most countries in WW2 iirc (switching sides helps).

Josco 49 Posted June 28, 2016 The campaign to re-run the Referendum is well under way. If not actually orchestrated by Brussels then it is surely actively encouraged, as has happened in other EU countries; we have to vote again until we get it right. Incidentally, in a 'normal' election the ballot papers are retained for a period of time in case of recounts etc, is this the case with the referenda papers? As I am sure you are aware, your ballot paper can be traced back to you, a less benign government could well check how you voted. To save you the trouble, I voted out, as I did all those years ago. I am nothing if not consistent. "May you live in interesting times" A Chinese curse, I understand.
